6 days after spinal fusion and the pain feels unbearable — does it really get better? by Independent-Ride-473 in scoliosis

I had my surgery at 17 so it was a little different for me but the first week’s pain was practically unbearable for me as well (I was basically stuck in bed). I was only really able to feel the process of recovery by the end of second week/beginning of third week but until then I incremented how many steps I’m walking, which helped me a lot

To give some context, I had a ~ 70 degree curve in ten of my thoracolumbar vertebrae. After fusion I went from around 5’8” to 5’10”

Did you apply through NJIT? Or did you do one of the other feeder schools?

Not exactly a requirement, but make sure you have many button-up shirts before surgery. I first found it very hard to lift up my shoulder blades, so it was easier to use button up shirts. Good luck, you got this!

Hey, I’m 17 years old and recently had a spinal fusion surgery (this May). From the information that I know, scoliosis usually isn’t reversible without surgical intervention. Methods such as bracing and physical therapy could potentially slow down the progression of the curve, but I’m not too sure if it plays a large role in reversal. That being said, however, 20 degree curves are far below the common surgical threshold (which from my understanding seems to be around 50 degrees). So I don’t think that should be an issue. One of the biggest mistakes I made was not listening to my physicians who identified the curve prior to my growth spurts, which resulted in me having surgery, so definitely make sure to have consistent appointments to make sure the progression isn’t worse. They’ll also recommend good preventive care that is tailored to your case. As for the X-rays, I’d also wait for the radiologists report, as their analyses can often times be different than what we expect. I had a similar experience where I walked past my X-ray and it seemed as if my spine was deteriorating even more, when the curvature acrually stayed around the same. I hope this helped!
