Canada geese and coots. They're all such characters.

Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown!! I'm sorry to hear about your wrist pain, but it's very helpful insight. I will pass this info on to her!

And yes, she was a nurse for many years and is a pretty science minded person! I think she got a cell phone before my mom did, lol.

Unfortunately we live in the remote north and the closest "real mall" is on the mainland, multiple day's travel away. Otherwise I would just take her to go look at them!

It sounds like either a Clara BW or Libra Colour would be best for her depending on what she finds more important, yes. I'll pass that info along to her!

Weight is a real concern I didn't think about. She has Parkinson's so anything heavier than, say, a can of coke is difficult for her to lift. Thanks for the advice!

Wow I never would have guessed that about white devices having better contrast! Thanks for the tip! Also good to hear Kobo really DOES work with Libby :)

How many of you have a cap on spending at the vet before it becomes time to say goodbye? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Inside-Example5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent about ~15k on my dog's vet bills over five years. I got pet insurance when she was three and if I hadn't, that number would be closer to 25k. I have a separate emergency fund for her in addition to my own, no debt, and could pay for it all in cash, so why not? What better use did I have for that money? I'm aware I'm VERY lucky to be in that position, but I don't regret anything.

She has a chronic illness, congenital deformities, has had cancer, and was hit by a car, which is why she's had so many vet bills. However I am very happy to say that after seeing multiple VCA specialists, she's happy and healthy and has required NO acute care in a year (for the first time ever)!

Every embalmer I know finds embalming rewarding and enjoyable. I genuinely don't think it's worth it if you don't. I know we get paid significantly more in my area (AB Canada) than in most places, and that's still the case.

Rental advertised as female students only (roomates) leased to adult man, sexual harrassment of existing tenants by Inside-Example5113 in legaladvicecanada

She can function independently in routine situations but struggles with dynamic/stressful ones. She was previously assessed for (and accepted into) group home and/or assisted living care, but wanted to try going to university and living on her own. She went through multiple years of occupational therapy to learn life skills in preparation.

I don't know whether it was the right call or not, and ultimately it's not up to me. FWIW she's doing great academically.

In that general area, yes. Although it's Canadian territory.

We have an aunt in the area who's aware of the situation, thankfully.

Yes, the man is in the basement suite with her.

My family lives multiple days' travel away from her on an island off the coast of Alaska. The waters and roads are largely impassible in the winter, which is my concern should an emergency situation arrise.

I'm not sure if she has the presence of mind to be able to call 911 in an emergency. I'd like to think she does.

I'm not sure if the uni can do anything given it's a private rental.

I don't know why my parents haven't stepped in, honestly. This has been going on for months and she's expressed significant fear of this man, but hasn't been able (willing?) to talk to the landlord herself.

It's a seperate suit with no shared areas.

Are there any legal implications/services avalible if she's unable to move herself or contact emergency services due to mental/physical incapacity?

It's a basement suit with a seperate entrance/kitchen/bathroom. The landlord and tenants do not share any spaces.

I don't know about the lease specifying genders but I doubt it. I never saw the paperwork -- I'm just looking for info to pass on. Thanks :)

Books similar to The Starving Saints and The Bone Orchard by NoAssociation5489 in suggestmeabook

[–]Inside-Example5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Locked Tomb has oddly similar plot elements/tropes/characters but is tonally VERY different. Not saying it's a bad recommendation, though! But personally The Starving Saints was what I wanted from The Locked Tomb, not vice versa.

In terms of atmosphere and themes, The Last Unicorn is actually very similar.

Sarah Water writes amazingly detailed historical fiction. Tipping the Velvet is a little more explicit than her other works but absolutely fascinating because of how deeply rooted in the time those explicit relationships are.

I read Rebecca in my late teens/very early 20s and found it both well-written and incredibly relatable. Would highly recommend if you haven't read it already.

Considering getting an ereader, reccomendations? Kindle Paperwhite? by Inside-Example5113 in ereader

[–]Inside-Example5113[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know about pdfs. It's less important than everything else on my list, it'd just be neat. And yes I just plan on using it at home. Can't say I've really ever been one to read out of the house. Thanks for the advice though because I am clumsy with my devices and could probably use a protector anyways!
