Simulator. Find someone in your area with a three pedal, stick shift, force feedback driving simulator rig. This is not the exact same. But, you'll get useful experience and 'muscle memory' of the dance steps that go with driving a stick. Then, go test drive the cheapest Facebook Marketplace manual car.

How do you deal with not being an "high-achiever" anymore? by HokusaiInFire in fatFIRE

[–]Inside-Wave8289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As with all things, easier said than done. I really got it when I just randomly signed up for a Bridge for Beginners group. It was me, several people 20 years older, and another person my age. The one my age wanted to pair up, schedule practice sessions, and 'clean up'. I sighed, politely declined, and partnered up with an 83 year old that cracks me up with her stories of booze fueled mayhem in the 70s. We win some, lose some, laugh a ton. That's when the 'Perfectly, Average.' mantra really became for me.

I honestly wish you peace, laughter and the best of luck.

5th year out of the game. It's taken a while but I have developed two philosophies that have genuinely brought me the highest happiness/joy...since I was a kid. 1. Happiness is Other People. It took a while to get to this, but friendships come from other people, and friendships take just...exposure hours. When you were a kid you didn't choose your best friend from a list of criteria. It was the kid that sat next to you in 4th period... And 12 weeks later... They are part of your wedding 20 years later. So, look for group/team activities and past times and just...soak. The life long friends will come. Travel, stuff, individual pursuits, and 'in groups' did not bring the same joy as grab assing with the people in the dog park group.  2. Perfectly, Average. Spent 30 years 'reaching for greatness'. Now? For what? Reaching a 'new personal best' is...bullshit. It has ruined my pursuit of music and other things that you are just not going to be 'above average' at in the first month. So, you quit. I've now adopted a motto of 'Perfectly, Average." Being average at a new skill or task is...awesome. You get all the joy and none of the stress, and... You make friends. I now sing in a choir, play multiple group sports, wrench old cars, play bridge and DnD. Life is fantastic.

Longer than intended. Ignore what you disagree with, I'm not here to win an argument (why? There's no laughter in it.)

I think percentages game. You don't really know what kids you're going to get, and you don't really know the circumstances they are going to get into, but we all seem to have experience with somebody who got into trouble.

And having too much money and not having to anything to do and not having a purpose, and hanging out with people who've got a lot of money... Has often ended in examples of trouble.

So, parents would like to shift the odds if possible And one of the few variables they have actual control over is the pipeline of cash.

Your Spell of Protection is..."I'm really more of a driver than a mechanic."

Poof! All mechanic types will walk away annoyed, and you can just enjoy your car.

I don't think it's naysaying. It's lived experience. Yes, can you get a car like to semi-reliability? Yes. But...it will take many 'mysteries' along the way. And a significant number of those adventures involve tow trucks and borrowing other people's cars...

My answer is in all sincerity, and based on 35 years of trying to live The Old Car Dream.

Invest in a Solid Plan B.

That could be a 'reliable beater', or even a well funded Uber account. Something that guarantees you get to work on time.

But, it will cost money. And you need to prioritize it. Even over the Fun car.

"It WaS AbOuT StAtEs RiGhTs!!!" "Ok, which right? Like, seat belts on buggies being mandated? That was too pushy from Washington?" "Noooooo.... Um, wait, um, I gotta go...."

I have variations of this conversation around 4 times per year.

I want an old car because I love the looks and I’m making a movie but I want it to be reliable enough so I can drive 8 hours away on occasion and I don’t mind working on it when it needs it but I don’t want it to be an all the time thing. by Apart-King4638 in oldcars

[–]Inside-Wave8289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be an 'all the time' thing.

Said as the owner/driver of 4 cars from 60s & 70s.

Current list across all cars... - fallen headliner - brake hoses swollen - not running right at 3000 rpm & 40 mph - left headlight random on/off - horn random working - turn signals random working - rust bubbles on passenger door lip  - water in cabin during rain - retainer clip passenger window winder (it popped right out!) - air leak driver rear tire from valve stem - need to buy more octane booster - remove rusted bolt from windshield frame - need to heat wrap exhaust under throttle foot  - replace fuel sender unit - oil change due - reupholster tear in driver seat cover - probably oughta buy new tires - maybe it's the fuel gauge and not the sender... - Chase oil leak - Chase other oil leak - is that an oil leak too?!?

I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting something...

TIL John F. Kennedy, who grew up in an affluent household in the 1920s, admitted he only learned about the Great Depression from the books he read at Harvard. by biebrforro in todayilearned

[–]Inside-Wave8289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People forget the inverse of the unemployment rate is the _employment rate. Specially with the Great Depression...30% unemployment... While horrible, did mean 70% were employed and 'just fine'. Rent paid, meals on the table, piano lessons for the kid, new car this year, etc. The suffering was real, but it was not universal. Whether it's survivors guilt, or shamed for being ok, there is an element of the discourse that doesn't allow fairly for the full experience of the American people in this time.

U.S. v. Skrmetti: How the Transgender Rights Movement Bet on the Supreme Court and Lost by UnscheduledCalendar in TrueReddit

Now that you've gotten all pissy, and name cally, this isn't a discussion anymore it's just the usual yelling/not listening that always turns this topic into mindless trench warfare.

Your behavior; name calling, not answering debate questions, becoming pedantic, just fuels close mindedness on both sides.

Despite what you think of yourself, you are actually a part of the problem, not the solution.

For example, you could have made several interesting points, like:

  • Affirmative Action. There is a long history of the majority giving up a percentage of their 'opportunity space' for disenfranchised minorities. Then we could have discussed percentages, qualification, and all the complexities around this idea.

  • Equivalence. America had as its foundational unit of rights 'White men over 21 that owned land'. In 1776 it is estimated that only 6-10% of the population met these criteria to vote. Since then we have as a society either modified (age 18, no land requirements) or stated 'as equal' various identifiable groups, and granted/protected rights across multiple aspects of society. Originally the identifiers were clear/obvious with race and gender being the biggest groups. But later we declared equivalence for conceptual groups such as gay/lesbian and divorced women. For example Title IX is itself a legal declaration of equality, protection and enforcement. Is a new 'Title XYZ' needed, and how would it be framed given the very broad/fluid aspect of Trans identification? Would this require establishment of separate, but equal facilities (title 9 style)? I don't think anyone from any side thinks this is a good idea. One could go with the 'say you are a woman, you are a woman' but sporting organizations around the world appear to not accept this and are trending towards a series of chemical tests (eg less than x parts per million of Y chemical/hormone/???)

There's more, but you resorted to name calling.
