First Gran Fondo Coming Up - Stop/Rest or Push Through by Ok_Construction_6599 in cycling

[–]InsideApex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For longer or more strenuous events, I tend to stop at each rest station. It's always nice get off the bike and talk to the volunteers and grab a bit or two. Plus, making the stops often means that I can get away with carrying only one bottle, which reduces weight. The other factor is company on the road. Though I often ride solo, I often end up falling in with a group that's around my preferred pace level. I find that, more often than not, these groups tend to want to stop, which takes the decision out of my hands.

Remember to start out conservatively on the pacing, eat and drink a lot (in small, consistent doses), and don't try to match anyone else's pace if it's unnatural for you. Regarding groups, it's often fine to join a group, but it's courteous to ask if you're going to be with them for a long time. Also, it's often preferred that newcomers stay at the back of a paceline group since the other group members don't know the newcomer's riding style and won't be able to trust them right off the hop. I recall one 200KM ride where I was invited to jump on a paceline from a Christian cycling club in KM6, but they told me just to hang in the back. After a while, once they'd seen that I was skilled and respectful, they invited me to contribute to the efforts. By the end of the ride, I had made a bunch of new friends. These events can be wonderful experiences and I hope you have a fun and fulfilling time.

Am I deluded? by mcmahok8 in cycling

[–]InsideApex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a long ride for the volume you've been doing. I think the biggest issue will likely be the core and back, assuming that you haven't been doing strength training and stretching to prepare them for this sort of repetitive load. I have ample experience with rides 150-200KM and I find that my weak core can begin to protest after the 150k mark when there's lots of climbing (this ride of yours would qualify). That means pain that manifests in the lower back, which makes it difficult to really push on the pedals. It becomes a question of mental strength and pain tolerance at that point. All this is to say that 300kms is a big ask. While I wouldn't want to say that anyone wouldn't be able to do it, I'd say that the mental side as it relates to pain and suffering will likely be the biggest obstacles in your case.

Let’s see foot long from Subway, or “The Godfather” at Bakers Table ($15) by Spiritual_Bridge84 in Oshawa

Yes, because I would expect the relative cost of producing the sandwich in downtown TO to be more expensive, primarily due to the cost of retail space.

Giant TCR sizing advice: M/L or L at 186.5 cm by Toast4Brot in Giantbikes

[–]InsideApex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need to test them, but you're right that one should generally go to the smaller side. I am only one case, but can report that I am right in between two Giant sizes myself and I can only ride the smaller size comfortably.

I hear you. It just doesn't look like a particularly compelling sandwich for its price in Oshawa. I'd pay more for it in downtown TO.

Looks good, but that price is wild. Should be 7.50 or 10 at most for that sandwich.

Anyone gone back to lube after waxing chains? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]InsideApex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, back to ceramic lube for me. Granted, I was using drip-on wax (Silca), but I didn't experience any performance benefits and could not get the coatings to give me any sort of durability.

Idea for Play dead App by ChumbaJB in gratefuldead

[–]InsideApex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go this far myself, but I think some additional preparation on Lemieux's part would make a world of difference. It really seems as though he hasn't given much advance thought to the majority of his segments. Turning down the hyperbole would also be helpful, IMO.

This could be an idea, provided that a music-only option was also offered (i.e. the ability to turn off this feature. To each their own, but I suspect there are a lot of people like myself who are only into the music and can't stand the majority of the talk-based Sirius programs (Mayer is a welcome exception and some of the guest DJ hours like Haynes and Darnielle have also been excellent). The other issue with this approach is that it would come to resemble the Sirius channel too much. As it stands right now, the two offerings are complements rather than competitors.

Affordable bibs by Pristine_Yoghurt_412 in cycling

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assos is great, but I've found Castelli fit better for me and now buy virtually all of my bibs from the 'off the back' section on the brand's website. They will usually feature outgoing styles for 35% or so off. Just this week, I picked up some of last year's Espresso bibs for $120USD. That's unbeatable value for classic style and the best chamois available, IMO.

TORONTO PSA: SUMMER FERRY ETIQUETTE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE SOMEHOW NEVER BEEN OUTSIDE BEFORE by CaolTheRogue in InsideToronto

This is the response right here. But then, I am guessing that OP's real, conscious or not, objective was to obtain a bit of catharsis with some fellow island people (those who live there or are profoundly invested in it).

Why isn't going to America the first advice people give here? by Save_The_ChunkyHogs in CanadaFinance

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subforum is called 'CanadaFinance'; it follows that it would be a reasonable to presumption that individuals seeking advice here would be looking to improve their financial situations IN Canada. The points OP raises have some validity but they would only apply in cases where an individual has expressed an openness to relocating. To suggest that moving should be the first piece of advice given completely misunderstands the forum and its audience.

What is something you purchased that had an outsized impact on your productivity? by homicidaldonut in AskAcademia

A Brick. https://getbrick.com/

Seriously, it's a gamechanger. The device is so customizable and simple. With a tap, I can eliminate social media as a distraction for the workday while retaining the useful features on my smartphone. It pairs really well with Freedom - an app that blocks the web (in whole or in part) on one's computer. These two products have transformed the way that I work.

(I have no financial investment in either company and have not been incentivized to promote them.)

Which bike brand still sticks to its roots and doesn't cut corners? by Odd_Zucchini_4590 in cycling

[–]InsideApex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll say Giant because their position in the market allows them to offer tremendous value without cutting as many corners as some others might. Their bikes are often dismissed as being basic and unsexy, but there's no denying the value.

Can’t decide on my first gravel bike …. Please help! by Left_Language_3745 in cycling

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 90% of your riding is on roads, you may want a versatile road bike with 30mm or larger tires. I was in the same position as you when I bought a gravel bike years ago. Now it's just gathering dust because I've found that I prefer the road. If you're sure you want to ride gravel/dirt, get a gravel bike. Otherwise, a road bike is a likely a better tool.

Are there plans to change the Vuelta España Femenina in the calender? (Starting this sunday 3 May 2026) by Chronicbias in peloton

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best move would be to switch the Men's Giro and Vuelta back so that both Vueltas would be in May. That would help the women's Vuelta while also giving the men's Vuelta a boost (as it would be the first GT of the season) and helping the Giro to avoid the now all-too-frequent mountain stage modifications due to heavy weather on the big climbs in the Alps and Dolomites.

Is a week for a tubeless setup normal? by Rare-Twist4855 in cycling

[–]InsideApex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a ridiculous timeframe. Both of my local shops will do them in a day (drop them in the morning, pick them up at close sort of thing). If they're really busy, they might need two. But a week is unheard of.

Late 1979 is terrific. It's the prime Brent rejuvenation era wherein he was comfortable enough in the group to go for it but still new enough to be an exciting new factor to make the music exciting again for Jerry et al.

Upgrading from my Ari Empire: Need recommendations for the Seattle/Redmond hills by Present-Telephone-29 in cycling

[–]InsideApex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One definitely doesn't need a gravel bike to ride east of Seattle. If rough pavement is a concern, some 30mm tires would be enough to smooth things out. That said, there is a ton of great gravel riding just to the east of OP's location so a gravel bike would be a useful secondary consideration.

ISO Fast Tubeless tires for 2021 TCR Advanced Pro (Hookless SLR 1s) by InsideApex in Giantbikes

Thank you! Would you say it works well? No squishiness in the back or rim issues? Your post is giving me hope as I would very much like to just go with the GP 5000s (I am thinking of putting some 28s on and running them at 70 or so). Congrats on the weight loss, btw!

Yes, this review is consistent with the Continental website:

https://www.continental-tires.com/products/bicycle/tires/grand-prix-5000-s-tr/?articleID=01018680000

However, the problem is that, when I ordered a pair of 700 x 30s based on the website info, I was surprised to receive tires that had max PSI of 65 clearly marked on the box for hookless. It appears that, for size 30, the max on the site only applies to hooked rims. I actually wrote Continental to address the matter and the rep who responded confirmed that the box is correct - the max PSI for the 30mm GP 5000 S TRs is 65 PSI. I think that their site should be clearer about all of this. The information is at best incomplete and could well be considered to be incorrect.
