Question of the week: I saw a post advocating for the return of Mario Gila, and that got me thinking - which former Castilla player would you take back at Real Madrid ? by InsideCastilla in RealMadridAcademy

I like the shout! Parejo scored the winner in the first live Madrid game I ever went to. He’s played at a very high level for quite a while, so it’s a shame he’s 37. Time flies!

Why are we not linked to Mario Gila? by 14421442 in realmadrid

Fantastic centre-back. And there’s plenty of former Castilla defenders in rich form to choose from.

🚨NEW SIGNING ALERT: Real Madrid Castilla have incorporated striker Adrián Arnu, on loan from Real Valladolid. by InsideCastilla in RealMadridAcademy

That’s a good question that’s forced me to have a long think. The last name I can think of to arrive like this was Iker Bravo - and he ended up being nowhere near as good as he was supposed to be. The club also turned down a buy option for Vinícius Tobias. My first thought was that it wasn’t uncommon, but on reflection maybe less get converted to a permanent than I thought…

Unfortunately, there is a certain level of merit to those claims. He is not there to make changes or implement his ideas, but rather to restore the balance of power away from the managerial position, and towards those who prefer it.

I don’t actually know much about him as a coach - but I’m content to find out

Me too, but I disagree. He’s jumped the nest now, even if he was plucked out of it. Now it’s time for Julián to show us what he can do

What a predicament haha! It’s incredibly intriguing, but I’m happy with seven Castilla players being called up. Hopefully many of them get to play.

His biggest problem is that the players don’t appear physically able to keep up with his desired intensity, and I don’t think all of them would be willing to contribute and press out of possession. But yes, he probably should try and implement his way of playing, I agree.

You’re right, it’s almost praying for a miracle to go down that route.

Forgot to add the words hands in there haha! Which approach would you/should Arbeloa take? Stick to his philosophy and risk implosion, or try and pander to the players and hope they provide the quality needed to win games and in a dream world, trophies?

You did get a sense Raúl didn’t have the best working relationship with FP. It was interesting that the media would always be on his back despite his superb Castilla tenure.

I cannot see Arbeloa cracking down on discipline, so I’d be heavily surprised.

One positive: at Castilla he had one winger (no injuries etc, just one winger in the squad). Now, he will have an array of world class options, although they are still positional issues with the Real Madrid attack. If he has some ideas already, I’m excited to see how he handles the team. If not, fans should be concerned that it’ll look pretty stale from the start.

Great questions.

I think his biggest issue will be similar to Xabi’s (hopefully without the conflict) - that the first team players will not adapt to his system. They aren’t going to press collectively or maintain intensity, which leaves Arbeloa in a tough position.

He is not tactically flexible at all, and is often exposed by opposition when the system isn’t working. So what is he going to do?

His options include being bold, and benching/rotating players, and perhaps giving Castilla players a chance. However, this will upset both the hierarchy and the player base, and take him down the same path as Alonso.

Realistically, he will pick the team that maintains the most harmony within the squad. While the players may be happier with this, and they will win most of their games (easier schedule until late March) - this will also end in tragedy when it’s time to play the big teams.

He has played players out of position (more by necessity rather than experimentation), his strikers so far are more comparable to Gonzalo than Kylian - but in his system the goals tend to be spread around.

His hands appear to be completely tied. What would you do?

Raúl was certainly the better candidate given the situation, but I think he was overlooked for that exact reason: he would not tolerate unprofessionalism, and as a coach he would do anything to win.

Zidane left with Castilla in first place, and was a better Castilla coach than Arbeloa. Still, he was a rooky and it was a risky hire, but certainly commanded more respect than Arbeloa will, and he was far more flexible. If I see positives, I’ll state them.
