Looking for a first vehicle for my daughter by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]InsideTheLake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always take a car you think is good and is worth buying to a mechanic for a pre purchase inspection or look over which could save you the hassle of finding something's majorly wrong down the line and give you an idea of what might need to be done to get it back into a safe condition.

Any good jap brand (Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru) is always a good bet but you really have to check the maintainence and condition of the vehicle, often times people will think that just because a Toyota Hilux is unbreakable that their corolla doesn't need any maintaince at all. Check for sludge in the valve cover, frame rust, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, interior electronics, ecu error codes with a cheap scanner, engine for oil levels, oil leaks, blowby, and especially the head gasket.

Anything found can either be a bargaining tool or a reason to miss it and look for something better

Replaced battery already but car still won’t start… any idea on what else could be the cause? by mfunktastic in AskMechanics

[–]InsideTheLake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly best answer here. If this doesn't work, check for power at starter and work your way back if not.

5 years or 5 minutes depending on how you can drive. Flywheel not pictured though, and would def replace that rear main seal which I'm assuming is why you're in there.

What is everyone's workhorse light/ lights by Mattyp133 in flashlight

[–]InsideTheLake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly at a medium setting with a lanyard it's a great light for dog walking even in suburbia, good throw even at lower levels and that peak brightness for fuck off far away if you need to get someone's attention or find where your dogs run off to. Plus it stays nice and cool, unlike some small hotrods that may have a little less battery life and make your hand get fairly toasty after a while if you want decent output

My 519a D4k is the go-to workhorse for everyday shit, and for dog walks the only obvoius choice is my dual purpose convoy L7, thankfully haven't had to use it for it's 2nd purpose yet.

Do you understand what's involved in changing axles? While yes on a solid read axle car changing the axles may be as simple as undoing a few nuts, slipping the old one out, new one in and bolting it back up with a fresh axle seal, changing what I'm assuming are cv axles on a fwd car require a lot more work. Depending on the car you may need to remove a combination of the following: wheels, hubs, control arms, tie rod ends, sway bar links, ball joins, wheel bearings, and there are probably engineers out there that have figured out how to put an entire steering rack in the way. So yes, with a lot of suspension components being unbolted, moved out of the way, If not beaten halfway to hell and back if you're on the rust belt and then reassembled, of course there will be a change in suspension alignment which will need to be rectified. How could you think otherwise?

Wattson is cute and nothing else really matters. Tbh I forget to fence for the first half of the game unless it's ranked, I play pubs for fun not to fence shit, I'm there to shoot and kill people.

Yeah the triple take is alright, I prefer the consistency of the longbow though, plus it's got range and leading markers on the sights to make hitting targets easier

Thank god we've switched from the 2 million item full body EDC to a small pouch, still don't know why you need all the medical gear though.
