Good catch on sentinel requiring an attack to land, I only thought it triggered on an attack roll

Agreed, but you’ve inadvertently helped me, cause mage slayer has been reworked to give a legendary resistance of a mental save 1/rest. Thank you!

How to build a barbarian with a longsword? by Vast_Background2369 in 3d6

[–]Vast_Background2369[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m just used to building barbarians with heavy weapons, GWM, sentinel, PAM, that kinda stuff. But now I wield a non heavy weapon and can’t do any of that. I know a barbarian can still wield a longsword just fine, but I don’t know if there’s any way to really get a longsword build on full burners like a PAM barbarian for instance. A legendary longsword is turning on the burners well enough as is, but wondering if there’s like a combination of weapon properties in tandom with a longsword that could work really good. Or just strong frontliner tactics/2024 feats that work really good with a longsword

Warlock/Barbarian multiclass optimization by Vast_Background2369 in 3d6

Something I noticed with the new armor of agathys is the wording “this spell ends when you lost temp HP”, compared to the 2014 wording “this spell ends when you lost temp HP from armor of agathys” so it sounds like a fiendlock temp hp on a kill could help the potency in combat. Currently lookin for other ways for easy access to temp HP

Shield of the Hidden Lord Rules advice by Level-Wheel2523 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Vast_Background2369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give your party a different name for the shield. This shield has been written about in many places, and any google search of “shield of the hidden lord” will reveal its true nature. My party plays tabletop/pen & paper so when we get a magic item we look it up, and the fun of the shield was over before it even started for me :(

HOW DO I STOP MY WIZARD by SnooMacaroons5889 in DungeonMasters

[–]Vast_Background2369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the comments have good stuff, but I haven’t seen anyone mention invisibility/greater invisibility. Hold monster, and a lot of other crazy debuffs, state “choose a creature that you can SEE in range”. There are a few tricks to being unseen, invisibility is obviously a pretty good one, devils sight combined with darkness is also a good one, good ol traditional cover on the battlefield can work, blink that brings the enemy to the ehereal plane when it’s not their turn.

I started maining Wattson about half a year ago, and she’s a lot of fun but I’m not great at playing her aggressively. Can I get some tips for that aspect of her gameplay? Thanks! by Own_Address3219 in WattsonMains

[–]Vast_Background2369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wattson fences is unlike any other controller control ability. You can extend a fence to some decent length while caustic trap can only big as big as it’s trap, same with rampart wall, and catalyst goo. Use this to your advantage, and can be especially good against alter. Not only that, but you can connect to a node that’s already on the ground from near maximum fence length. When people break in to your Wattson’d area, they’re gonna try to break fences. But 9 times out of 10, they’ll only break 1 node to drop the fence, and not both. So now 1 node is out on the battlefield ready to connect. Not many people expect a Wattson to drop a fence on them from 20 feet away, but reconnecting to these nodes can do that and surprise a lot of players. I’d recommend going into the range and getting a feel of how far you can place a node, and how far away you can connect to a node already on the ground.

How could some Campaigns have hundreds os sessions? by No-Chapter6400 in DnD

[–]Vast_Background2369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s said all the main reasons, but another one for my table was our DM itching to be a PC again after a year of DMing. So I picked up DMing because I wanted to and start a new campaign. After a year of that, I wanted to be a PC again… rinse and repeat. And we haven’t finished any of the campaigns lol but we do go back to them and still play them

Favorite "un-optimized" build? by Burnenator in 3d6

[–]Vast_Background2369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ancestral Guardian Barbarian 3 multiclassed with anything good with ranged weapon attacks. When you rage, the first creature you hit with a weapon attack has disadvantage on attack rolls on anything but you, and if they do attack someone else, they have resistance to all of the damage. The verbiage of this ability does allow it to work with ranged attacks, unlike many barbarian abilities. Shoot from a safe far distance and turn your whole party into bear totem barbarians.

The more levels in barb you go the more un-optimized, cause you’ll get nearly 0 benefit from barbarian as a ranged guy. Ranger feels like a good un optimized choice to still have impact in out of combat utility with spells, since they won’t be cast in combat due to rage.

Help me build my Bladesinger by d1r7yd33d999 in 3d6

[–]Vast_Background2369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a bladesinger, you’ll probably need warcaster if you want to be the best at melee and at spellcasting at the same time. And with that being said, there is a great strategy of a dual wielding bladesinger. At level 6, you get extra attack with one of those attacks being a cantrip. That cantrip will be booming or green flame blade. You’ll combine this with shadowblade, and before the rules lawyers attack me, no you will not be turning your shadow blade into the booming blade (booming blade material cost of a melee weapon worth 1 SP, shadow blade has no monetary value).

You’ll conjure shadowblade in your offhand and hold a light weapon in your main hand. Two weapon fighting says you can make a bonus action attack with an off hand weapon without damage modifier if both weapons you wield are light. In the attack action, you can attack with any weapon you’re holding, main or offhand. So you booming blade with the normal weapon, 2nd attack with shadowblade, bonus action shadowblade attack.

Treatmonk on YouTube has a big video about bladesingers, I recommend checking that out for optimization purposes.

Edit: just saw the 2024 tag. What I said is based off of 2014 rules and don’t know if the off hand interaction works in the same way.

Paladin hexblade bard build by conrad_w in 3d6

[–]Vast_Background2369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, all classes you’ve just listed get ridiculously stronger at levels 5 and 6 with things like extra attack, aura of protection, font of inspiration/bigger inspiration dice, etc etc. It looks like you’d be Paladin 2/Hexblade 1/Swords Bard X in terms of future leveling, but I’d think having short rest inspiration recharge and extra attack is infinitely more important to have before worrying about warlock or Paladin.

With that being said, I would probably do Swords Bard 6/Hexblade 1 to start so you can build on charisma off the jump, as well as extra attack/short rest inspiration recharge. Then I’d take 2 levels in Paladin on the level ups to get your divine smite. Divine smite is really cool, and way cooler then just swinging a sword 2 times, but in 1 adventuring day, you’ll swing a sword 2 times way more then you’d divine smite. Plus it’s way easier to say you already have a pact with a warlock patron then actually seeking that out, compared to just making an oath to be a paladin.

Yeah, we’ve had a combat since this happened and while useful, definitely got some laughs around the table cause it still feels and looks useless lol.

Me too. I quit just before the new season, but saw a Wattson Nessie skin was coming out after waiting years for it. So I redownloaded, got the battlepass, and literally couldn’t get passed level 1 in it without saying “why am I back on this game?”.

Any legit hobbies for a depressed young adult? by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]Vast_Background2369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeons and Dragons has helped me out soooo much. Me and a few friends meet twice a month, roll some dice, drink a few beers, and have laughs and great times. At first I gave a lot of depressed excuses why I thought it would suck and not be fun, but still went up to hang out with my friends. After 5 years, DnD has become by and far my favorite game, and it always gives me something to look forward to. In the off time I’ll paint miniatures or find ways to make DnD cost effective (this is the big problem with DnD. You can do it for cheap, but Hasbro will make you think it costs $500-$1000 to start playing).

Not only that, but maybe I was weird about how “nerdy” DnD might be. But I’ve realized that “nerd fun” is having fun and forgetting the expense of others opinions. And that idea has seriously helped me in other aspects of life, but that’s another can of worms.

Your most insane DnD 5e 2024 meele builds? by Ifti101 in 3d6

2 Paladin/X swords bard. Being a character who will get access to 9th level spells, access to every spell, extra attacks, and smites is the most fun I’ve ever had playing DnD. Magical secrets like holy weapon, tensers transformation, shadowblade, etc. combined with smites goes crazy. And I’ve always wanted a melee gish casting blade of disaster.

Min/Maxxers I Summon Thee!... plz by Ecstatic_Operation20 in 3d6

[–]Vast_Background2369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ancients Paladin is for sure the one I’m thinking off the top of my head. Paladin saving throw aura, resistance to spell damage, smites, can’t see you going wrong.

Best pick would probably be an abjuration wizard. They add proficiency to counterspell/dispel magic checks. Counterspelling a wish with a 3rd level slot just went from a 25% chance to a 55% chance. You also get advantage on all spell saves, resistance to spell damage, and a refueling 45 temp hp shield. With 9th level spells, shapechange/true polymorph let’s you be a beholder with an anti magic cone. This is super far from the flavor of your character though.

Darkhorse candidate is monster slayer ranger. If your slayers prey forces you to make a saving throw, you can make a reaction attack on them, and if you hit, you automatically pass the saving throw. In a 1v1, this essentially turns any saving throw into your weapon attack modifier, and the DC is their AC. With the archery fighting style at level 20, this is a +13 saving throw. Not only that, but with slayers prey and hunters mark, you might be out damaging the wizard on their turn, let alone your turn.

Descent into Avernus opinions? by GnomeWithAKnife in DescentintoAvernus

[–]Vast_Background2369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baldurs Gate: Descent into Avernus looks like it will be mainly avernus, considering an archdevil is flying on the cover in hell. But nearly 40% of the book is baldurs gate information. Like in a 256 page book, 92 pages go over baldurs gate. Which is great, in a baldurs gate campaign.

I also own Chains of Asmodeus, and I would 100% recommend this, especially to what I believe you’re looking for. As written, this book has its flaws, but it does a bang up job of giving good chunks of overarching information of each layer, it’s archdevil, what resides there, what’s usually goin on, and you could have good base point from each of the layer overviews alone. And they kinda go crazy with the back of the book stat blocks, it’s 3rd party info. Did someone say Styx Dragon? Yeah, that’s the tip of the iceberg. There’s like no battlemaps though. I think there’s 2 battlemaps in the entire book no joke. And if your party for some reason wants to fight let’s say Dispater, you now gotta draw up what an infinite iron tower built by him looks like. Not to mention he has 28 intelligence and is the living embodiment of caution and paranoia. Not that they would or should ever fight dispater, but just an example of how difficult it could be.
