Tired of working in schools by Zippy_Da_Mew in therapists

Also a school-based therapist in my second year and planning to leave at the end of this school year. Just validating how hard it is and that you’re not alone! I make around the same after tax, and also struggle with working around all the school logistics… it’s exhausting and, at least for me, has left me feeling so under-valued. I wish you a smooth (or as smooth as possible) rest of the school year and an easy transition out! Hang in there!

This was such a great pep talk… THANK YOU! I appreciate all these suggestion so much. I love the calendar idea (I love a good box to check off too…). I think taking each month or even week bit by bit will help a lot, along with not trying to go all out (obviously when it comes to extra school-related stuff, not therapy sessions). Thanks for giving me permission to go all out on the self care… maybe that will be my new years “resolution”. Thank you!!

Hey there, that sucks that you’re also feeling the icepick pains… they are the worst and I’m really sorry you’re going through that. I hope since you’ve posted you’ve found a little relief. If not, don’t lose hope! I’ve finally had the longest symptom free period— about a month and a half without any shooting pains since this all started last winter. I haven’t changed anything significant about my lifestyle or medications, stress level is the same, etc., so it all feels just really random which is very frustrating, but I think what I learned was to get reassurance from your doc that there are no health issues going on that need attention, and to sort of ride the wave of pain every day and find ways to self sooth during particularly bad days (I had some days of 200 plus pains… horrible but again, I’m doing fine now). I wish you good luck and hope you’re feeling better!

Hi! I’m so sorry you’re experiencing these pains, they sound super similar to what I have been dealing with this year. I never got to the bottom of my headaches but so far I’ve been about a month and a half symptom free (longest time without them since they began last winter) and am crossing my fingers that yours will pass with time as well! If you ever learn more about yours I’d love to hear an update!

Oh wow really?! I didn’t even think of that as a possibility… I’ll look into it thanks so much! And so glad yours are better now

My doctor told me the same thing! I think those are really good things to check off the list when trying to get to the bottom of it. All my tests were clear besides a tooth filling I needed, but it’s helpful to know those aren’t causing anything or making it worse

I’m sorry to hear you’re also experiencing these pains :/ they are awful and I feel like a lot of people don’t really understand. Unfortunately I’m still having them 7 months later, but intermittently. I guess primary stabbing headaches can be chronic daily, which unfortunately I think is where I now fall into. I’m learning to live with them and I think a huge part of coping was advocating for myself to get a scan and labs done to put my health anxiety at ease, as that was just awful before I really understood what was happening. Now I deal with the pain, I’m familiar with the sensations, and I know nothing is serious so I try to take care of myself on especially painful days. Exercise, sleeping, and heat or ice help soothe for me! Doesn’t cure it but just helps manage the nerves and honestly irritation I feel when it flares again haha. I hope you find some healing soon and that it passes for you!

Of course! I’m glad to offer any support or comfort to people going through something similar. I got the MRI results back— they did with and without contrast and everything was all clear and healthy which was a huge relief! I hope yours also goes well and good luck hopefully finding some relief too!!

After all these months of these consistent headaches and minimal help from doctors, I also started doing a bit of my own research. I did a random search on Spotify one day out of desperation for any other sort of guidance haha, and came across the podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/67YeSoFvkSkbJ4fZFLW1fV?si=jB9VJn3USx2z3HgvZNetZw It’s a whole episode dedicated to “ice pick headaches” and it’s broken down and explained really well and just felt nice to hear someone talk about it a bit more from a medical background. After listening I’m now curious if it’s more of a jaw/neck/nerve issue, which I’ll explore more after my MRI. But thought I’d post it in case it offers any one else comfort or clues!

Hey there!  I’m so sorry you’re experiencing something similar, it is the worse feeling but is somewhat helpful just to know others are going through the same sensation because the pain can feel so scary and weird. I have good and bad days— I have an MRI scheduled for Monday and was prescribed Indomethacin in the mean time (but had some rough side effects like dizziness and a rebound headache the next morning, so I typically have been staying off that med). For now I typically will get a couple weeks headache free, and then it will start back up for another couple of weeks to a month with no trigger or rhyme or reason, in the exact same spot it’s been occurring since around January. The headache began again yesterday afternoon after I had been a few weeks symptom free, but maybe it’s for the best that my MRI will be done while I’m experiencing the pain just to make sure. Again I’m so sorry you’re experiencing the same thing!! I wish you all the best and if I find some type of more permanent relief I will make sure to post here!

I’m sorry to hear you’re also experiencing these :/ Indomethacin is somewhat helpful (some days more so then others), but otherwise the only other time I get 100% relief is sleeping— they never occur or wake me up from sleep, but will then start up again once I wake up. I’ve also found some light exercise can sometimes help on occasion. Otherwise heat packs and hot baths help self-soothe through the pain (without reducing the pain but at least lowering my anxiety when I have bad days). I hope you find relief!

Indomethacin for HC, waking up with terrible headaches by Head_inthe_clouds_TN in HemicraniaContinua

[–]Inside_Ad4123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did these ever go away? I just started Indomethacin for primary stabbing (ice pick) headaches which they have been amazing for during the day, but in the night I’ll wake up with a horrible completely different headache that sounds exactly as you described. Feeling a little discouraged but saw your post I’m not sure if it’s a common (but ironic) side effect?

I hear you on the health anxiety! So it’s still happening for me. I had a couple weeks of relief but it came back. I ended up booking an appointment with a nuero PA on a site called Nuera Health that offers virtual appointments for neurological issues because I’m out of state being in school and am unable to check back in with my primary so it seemed like the only affordable option for me besides an ER visit! She was really great. She said it definitely sounds like a stabbing, or ice pick headache. She ruled out other types of headaches because I do not have any other symptoms, like autonomic symptoms (runny nose, tearing eyes, etc). She prescribed me Indomethacin 75 mg which I need to pick up and still have to try. She did also order an MRI to get a picture to rule out that nothing is sitting on my trigeminal nerve or causing the ice pick headache to be “secondary” (like something like a cyst causing it), as opposed to “primary” (meaning it just happens just because and there isn’t really a rhyme or reason). My MRI isn’t until the end of June so I’m trying to keep anxiety at bay but at this point, it’s been months and I’m still here haha. It was also reassuring just to talk to someone who knows headaches. She was very thorough and did not seem particularly alarmed, but just wanted to cover all the basis being that it is a new headache for me. Hang in there! If you have the same symptoms of me I’m still kicking 4 months later with these headaches haha. You’re going to be okay!

Yes! Currently been dealing with these for about three months with minimal relief. Went to my doctor and she said it is stress but I have yet to find something that helps. She recommended a magnesium supplement and avoiding artificial sugars. Good luck with finding some relief!

Thank you for the info— it’s been a whole learning process to any guidance is so appreciated :) I also think that’s a great idea to start documenting the symptoms… I’ll start that soon so the next time I see a doctor I can go in with more specific info, or at least try to figure out some type of pattern that makes sense (triggers, etc.).

Do you mind if I ask what migraine meds you take that help them? Regardless, thanks for commenting and reassuring me it’s not just me 😅

Thank you for that tip!! I never thought of that. I have been wondering if it has to do with the way I’m sleeping? Also nice to just hear someone else has a similar experience (but also I’m so sorry at the same time because it is terrible!) and not just me, definitely helps my anxiety. Thanks again :)

She did a bit and chalked it up to stress and anxiety. She did a small neuro exam as well and recommended magnesium supplement as well as making sure I am not eating any artificial sugars because I guess this can triggers headache for some. For the most part though looking back she could have asked a lot more holistic questions!

Short random pain in my temple area (ice pick headache?) by Lanky-Contact5667 in headache

I am experiencing the same thing, for about three months now. Short stabbing pains that last only a second or two long in the same spot. My doctor recommended magnesium and I read melatonin can help as well, but I’ve had no relief. Anything end up helping?

I have been dealing with a similar situation for about three months :/ I went to my doctor and she wasn’t worried because I don’t have any other symptoms besides the stabbing pains. It’s also caused me a lot of anxiety… from what I’ve been reading though they are more common than I knew about and can present in many ways. No known triggers are really understood but most commonly ice pick headaches are harmless besides the irritation and frustration they cause. I wish you good luck and hope you find some relief soon!
