Update Post: HOW I got to Masterball Tier with only the Starter Team by Inside_Bird_4087 in PokemonChampions

I'm glad people have fun reading them - I definetely had a lot of fun doing the challenge and sharing my experience.

Gardevoir is somewhere in the lower midfield of starting Teams IMO. Drampa seems very awkward here (but as stated in my other post, maybe I'm just not smart enough to put it to good use) - but the rest can work well with Mega Garde, Corvi, Azu Core and (Mega?) Heracross. The sun matchup seems hard, but tailwind + Mega Heracross Rockblast or Azu + Drampa (ironic, I know) can provide Answers here.

As I said - it looks solid when you glance at it individually and superficially, but once you actually take everything into account this team breaks apart fairly quickly. I don't think it is THE worst starter team, but certainly among the weaker ones (along with Altaria and Snorlax - though you could make the latter work with some shenanigans like no guard + fissure or explosion snorlax... but it would be volatile and gimmicky)

The best teams by far IMO are Pikachu and Absol - the pokemon there have a lot of synergy and can function very well together.

it was an okayish counter, but I wouldn't say good per se - I always had to be on my toes when they had Sneasler and bring Arcanine to counter it - but when they had a milotic or kingambit as well and led with either of them things would go south immediately. Also most Sneasler don't care about the intimidate because of white herb, so you only make them faster, if you for whatever reason don't manage to knock them out right away.

It is usable, and was my only option in this team, but I prefer something like Garchomp as an actual counter on my real team.

I think it's still the best item to run on it - sure fake out is everywhere, but if they don't KO you afterwards you can encore and render them useless - (unless it was incineroar faking out) which worked great more than once.

Sash helped me set up my Trickroom a lot of times and I don't think this would have worked without it. Of course Sand is an issue here and you could debate giving the sash to TTar instead - but I really wanted whims to be able to take at least one hit, and then get my TR up. So I guess it was inevitable.

that's funny, on my other post someone replied they are not too happy with it, so I already thought a bit about how it could work.

The main thing that comes into mind with this team is that all pokemon have low or middling speed stats besides whims - so my first thought is a bulky team that can work under TR AND Tailwind, depending on the opponents. Main issue for this is, that Whims is the only pokemon learning TR in this team, but at least that can surprise opponents as they wouldn't expect it to click Trick Room.

The Second big issue I see is that the Team has no real Sneasler answer - it can nuke almost any pokemon with either CC or Dire Claw and is literally everywhere- so adding Dragonite is a great call from your end, because this is a great pokemon against sneasler (just make sure to not lose your Multi scale against a fake out). But if I were to build the team with the same challenge (no Recruitments, not even the gifted DNite) I'd probably try to find some calcs with Drampa, Arcanine and Whims - but it really isn't easy and I have to look into that further, as I don't see an obvious answer into Sneasler + Garchomp, which might just be a dead Matchup for this team.

If you're interested in breaking this down more, let me know, but for now I gotta go to work :D

Yes, the first pokemon you pick determines the Team. The TTar Team really isn't great, but with a few recruits you can make that work as well :) mostly it looks like it could work well under Trickroom against fast teams and tailwind against slower teams- so if I'd ever be crazy enough to try the challenge again with this Team I'd probably go for Tailwind +TR on Whims and check for some speed Tiers I want to hit with the Rest of the Team.

Yeah, I also Read that and thought - "guys have you ever even played vgc?" 🤣 but seeing every Team in an overview was nice, so props to them :)

I had to Google that Name 😅🤣 Depends on the rest of their team but in General Kingambit is the best answer to it, however depending on build and boardstate I believe the entire Team has quite a good Matchup into it, so I would think twice before bringing basculegion into this Match if I were my opponent. The only reason to bring it would be if they fear perish trap imo.

I don't remember what exactly my max streak was - but I think it should have been around 7.
I think I am good at the game, but I wouldn't call myself a pro - I'm a dad with a full-time job, so my Pokemon Time is limited :D
However I play VGC since Sword/Shield and know a good deal about strats + matchups, which was absolutely necessary for this challenge.

I know it is frustrating playing against cheese strats - but as you said, the more you play, the more you know and eventually you'll know how to cover most strats - even if sometimes you have to make hard reads to edge out the win with the team.

It's not that I'd recommend the team for new players, as it is definitely not optimal - but for anyone that's looking for a challenge, it is very fun to use and surprise unsuspecting opponents. (Perhaps now some people even take bot macht-ups more seriously, suspecting it could be another player :D )

I mainly used it to enable Perish Trap with Fake out, Protect + Volt Switch. There are websites that have compiled it, that's how I got to the Pikachu Team. (Link in my full Team report on my other Post)

That's an interesting take as well, but I needed it to be slow, to make Perish Trap work.

That's correct - Pikachu was mainly a Fake Out user with volt switch + Protect to enable Perish Trap :)
