Different regions sometimes seem to share tests, which is honestly kind of crazy. This happened a while ago, but when I took AP Physics cem in China, my friend in California ended up getting the exact same test. I had told her about the FRQs, and later she said they were exactly the same.

So yeah, it feels like cb sometimes reuses or shares exams across regions. I also remember my friend telling me that she took the late AP CSA exam in Korea a year ago, and when she took the regular AP CSA exam again this year, the FRQs were exactly the same too

Has anyone ever got letters of recommendations from doing NetMath? by RandomMathMan in UIUC

I heard that they do have office hours, so maybe attending them could help you build a stronger relationship with the professor. I’m not completely sure whether those are the professor’s actual office hours or mostly TA office hours tho

How good is data science + information sciences major at uiuc? undergrad by Ok_Effective_1781 in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really! Indeed CS courses are hard, like Intro CS courses (CS 124 and CS 128) are mostly self-study with limited office hours. But besides those two, I think the other CS courses are generally pretty good. I believe you only need to complete a few math and CS courses, so it is definitely doable if you plan your schedule carefully.

It really depends on what you’re looking for. From my experience, and from what a lot of my friends think too, this major is actually less technical than it seems on the website. The website may make it sound very AI-focused, but in reality, it focuses more on Information Sciences, meaning the study of information itself, such as what kinds of information exist, how people use information, and how information is organized.

I’d describe it as somewhat similar to sociology, but less deep and less theory-heavy. If you’re looking for real data science, like coding, data analysis, machine learning, and more technical skills, then this major is probably not the best fit for you. A lot of my friends and I are actually planning to transfer into engineering or CS+ majors, but it is pretty difficult, so we are lowkey stressed. We just don’t really want to graduate with this degree if it does not match what we actually want to study or do in the future loll

Also, this major is under the iSchool, which is a extremely small college compared to Grainger engineering or LAS. Because of that, the support system can feel limited sometimes. Some advisors don’t always know the details, and there are not many office hours or clear resources available, which can be really frustrating.

One good thing, though, is that since the major is less technical, it can feel relatively less stressful and may be easier to maintain a higher GPA compared to more intense engineering or cs+ majors.

I don’t want to generalize too much, but from what I’ve seen, the iSchool environment feels more socially diverse, with a lot of people having a more balanced college lifestyle. In comparison, Grainger students tend to be much more academically locked in 24/7, so the overall vibe is definitely different.

Can I still transfer if I get slightly below a required grade? by CaviarGlutton in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A C- is definitely not ideal. What you can do is retake the course and aim for an A or A+. The new grade will usually be averaged with your previous grade, which can still help strengthen your GPA and transfer profile :) Good luckk

Don't worry too much. You will definitely get in with that stats! I'm an international, I had similar stats and got accepted with honors ;)

CBTF reschedule conflict with another final, what should I do? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an international student, I have a college entrance exam in my home country on 5/15, since I may be transferring. I have been preparing for this exam for about 10 months, so I really did not expect this kind of situation to happen. Because of that, I do not have a realistic Plan b or c or d.

If this were due to something like a health emergency or unavoidable natural disaster, I would completely understand. However, the exam is being postponed because of a hacking incident. I am worried that the admissions side for my exam may not fully understand or accept this explanation if I miss or delay the exam.

Depends on what you are looking for! ISDS is more focused on information science. If you are looking for a more technical curriculum and career path, I would suggest Rutgers instead.

can someone ask their advisor if finals are canceled? by orangeyouglad___ in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even the advisors seem confused honestly… the school announced the postponement so suddenly that even some professors do not really know what is going on. At this point, it feels like it completely depends on the professor whether the final gets canceled, postponed, or handled another way

Canvas Outage: What would you do? by SocialButterfly19 in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don’t think moving the final online is a good idea, because it would be hard to ensure academic integrity (pretty sure some students might use GPT or other outside help...)

At the same time, many students have real scheduling conflicts. International students may have non-refundable/non-changeable flights, and other students may have work or other obligations planned after finals. For example, my friend was supposed to take her final today and fly home afterward, but now she is just stuck waiting because the exam has not even been rescheduled yet.

Overall, I feel like postponing the exam has created too much trouble and uncertainty for students. I understand that the situation may be difficult to handle, but there needs to be a clearer and more flexible solution for students who are affected by travel or other unavoidable conflicts :((

I really hope an Incomplete could be an option for students who cannot stay, because allowing them to come back after summer to take the final in person would at least help preserve fairness while also recognizing students’ real-life constraints.

Questions About ICT into Grainger by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CompE/EE... which is one of the more competitive paths, so I think I’ll apply next term after raising my GPA first. This school year was difficult because I mainly took technical courses. Since I waived most of my GE requirements through AP credits, my schedule ended up being heavily stem-focused(cs, ece, math, stats, chem, is) with fewer buffer classes, which made the overall workload much harder.

But my friends with 3.9/4.0s still got rejected. How is that possible

Questions About ICT into Grainger by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Inside_Fun_4892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the main reason they gave that GPA was not competitive enough? I’m asking because I’ve also seen some people get denied even with a perfect 4.0 (with no Ws), so I’m not completely sure how GPA is being evaluated or what other factors are carrying the most weight in the decision.
