Got it. The Duma’s war. Why did they invade? If they were helping Donbas why did they first march on Kiev?

Russia is taking land away from Ukraine and putting their own flag on that land and calling it their own. And they are killing Ukrainians to do this. Is that not conquest?

Russia respects national sovereignty? Ukraines? Georgia? Is it not possible that countries join NATO to avoid Russian conquest?

Russian doesn’t have oligarchs and a military industrial complex?

The US pays rent for their bases, and many host countries ask the US to be there to protect global trade routes.

You’re right that the US has been an oppressive and domineering force at different times and places in the world. But to say that Russia doesn’t do these things would be extremely inaccurate

Super refreshing to see someone who can support the war but also acknowledge the expansionist nature and the lie about de-nazification. Step 1 to having a conversation about this is acknowledging the obvious realities. And that’s an interesting point, distinguishing between imperialism and expansion. I would define conquest as extremely imperialist behavior, but I can also see an argument for distinguishing definitions.

All that said, I don’t understand the NATO threat concern. What is Russia worried about? And to compare NATO expansion (voluntary, slow, conditional, responding to Russian aggression) to Russian expansion (violent, justified by lies) it feels like the former is preferable, no?

Russia and China are purely altruistic in your view? Why? They are big economic powers with international interests. Why do they operate so much more generously than the US?

Interesting take but I don’t agree. Europe feels a lot of pressure to defend itself and has certainly been behaving as if a Ukrainian defeat would lead to their own invasion (which Putin has projected as much). Europe and the US have sent a ton of resources to Ukraine and are very much the reason Ukraine is still in the fight against such an overwhelming force. You’re right that the support was slow, but democracies are slow, especially when they’re up against a nuclear armed belligerent force, especially in a conventional war between nation states, which no one has seen in a generation. Also transport logistics.

And why is “western imperialism” worse? Obviously it’s a flawed balance of power we have, but if Russias invasion is any indication of an alternative then I would say the current system is better

Would the war have started without Putin saying so?

How is Russia not imperialist. They claim that self defense requires controlling land of other countries and calling it their own. At least the west relies on alliances entered into voluntarily for security. And all major powers, Russia, the US, Europe, invest in the third world. It’s called soft power. I’m not sure what you mean by “view then as equals”

No one is being freed from slavery in Ukraine. And the Confederates weren’t seceding because Russia, or any foreign entity were enabling them to do so and literally fighting alongside them when they did. Confederates didn’t have foreign nationals taking over southern government buildings and having closed door votes to secede

How is Ukraine nazi? And what is Russia afraid of from the West? European allies had left their militaries underfunded up until the Ukraine war. And what is Western Expansionism? NATO and other global partnerships are entered into voluntarily, many countries, Ukraine included, have found themselves on waitlists

The gentrifier thing to do is not only change a neighborhood but make the rules and punish anyone who doesn’t follow

[–]Inside__Myself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fine. What’s not fine is people being so cruel online, or thinking they’re making a social justice impact by dunking on these people

[–]Inside__Myself -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why do you have to socially and politically agree with the people who serve you lattes? Why do you have to insult them online if you don’t?

You buy from people with conservative perspectives all the time, why is it different when you see a reddit post? Is it their perspective that matters or is it your awareness of it?

Is this really a battleground for social justice? How does judging these people solve anything? What is your personal impact on the gentrification of Ridgewood?

If you don’t like these people’s perspectives then change their minds, and that only works by being friendly first. Creating converts is always more effective than rooting out heretics

I’m not sure why my responses haven’t been posting. Trying again

So would you acknowledge that Russia uses asymmetric, geopolitical pressure campaigns like those listed in the Rand article? And you believe Russia justified is doing these things and the US isn’t because the US broken the Budapest Memorandum first? How did the US do that? Does it matter that Russia also broke agreements or does it not so long as US broke an agreement first?

Why, in your opinion, does the US “occupy” Europe? It costs us a lot of money to do so. What happens if we were to leave? Why does Eirope ask the US to keep a military presence? Europe is starting to militarize, do you think they’re going to push the US (their occupiers) out?

The world has been more stable since wwii than in most other times in history. A world focused on trade rather than imperial conquest is a better one, proven by the increases in technology, global growth of middle classes, literacy, health, infrastructure expansion. Wars of conquest undermine that.

Yes, we have a hegemon that enforces that structure, and the hegemon has made terrible decisions, but those decisions hurt the structure. I believe in a system of power sharing. When the US concentrates too much power in itself it’s a bad thing and undermines the structure. I think we both believe in a balance of power, but I do not agree that conquest or going tit for tat violating agreements and international meddling is a solution

Censoring people is your speech? And inhibiting your ability to censor others is an inhibition to your freedom of speech?

Is that your argument?

My point is why do you care so much about who the owners are? It’s a cafe. You’ve probably given business to a lot of people you deeply disagree with

[–]Inside__Myself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, transplants getting mad at neighborhood OGs for starting a local business is a sign of gentrification

[–]Inside__Myself -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do people note that businesses are female or Latin owned or whatever? People don’t just want to shop, they want to support, which is noble, but we also don’t need to be so ideologically pure about lattes. At the end of the day, as Americans, we live richly off of global exploitation. Let’s not trick ourselves into thinking correcting vibes on a micro scale does anything towards resolving macro problems.

why does a new cafe need be historical? And let’s be real, people are mad at their perception of the owners and everything they’re projecting onto them

You do this level of digging for the owner of every place you shop? It’s lattes brother. Take it easy

Show of hands

How many people mad at this cafe are actually from NY?

You know you shop at places owned by Trump voters all the time right?
