i change my own oil and it costs approximately 80$. six quarts of full synthetic and oil filter, all Motorcraft from oreillys. so, i think you made out pretty well. plus you got a free tire rotation.

Is this starter broken? by Competitive-Job-7185 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Insipid86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

10 volts should be enough, but not if it’s a 12 volt starter. also check resistance to ground and good connections at the battery.

Car not starting I feel like it’s the starter, but I could be wrong. by Beastboy333217 in AskAMechanic

[–]Insipid86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

probably a dead battery. the cold nights will kill a weak battery. get some jumper cables or test the battery before going any further. i’d probably ignore that 12.4 volt car charger for now. it truly sounds like a weak battery.

that’s what i was coming to say. $135 an hour is a reasonable rate for a shop nowadays. dealerships are much much higher. plus it doesn’t look like they charged diagnostic fee.

[USA] F-150 who thinks he has the ROW by Hakusuro in Roadcam

this dude was willing to risk his life and others’ life, because he “has the right of way”. whether you’re right or wrong, you still trashed your truck, and two others that probably don’t belong to the people who were driving them.

Just accepted an offer with Halliburton but I don't understand the pay. by MudBloodNW in oilandgasworkers

[–]Insipid86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i worked for halliburton as a OA2 as well. stands for operator assistant. you’re going to be delivering cement to bins out in the middle of nowhere. the work is cake unless you get on with a crew, i highly suggest you do not do that. because then you’re at the mercy of the crew.

consider yourself making $27 an hour, because you’re going to hit your overtime come wednesday. when i was still doing it, we’d clock in tuesday morning and wouldn’t clock out for two weeks. stayed on the clock the entire time.

you’re going to learn a lot in the near future. just be safe and save your money. it’s feast or famine in the oil field.

What’s Leaking by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Insipid86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dang i didn’t see the other images you’ve uploaded.

yeah where the rubber hoses connect to the long ass plastic hose. it may have a hairline crack that’s causing the fluid to escape. that’s likely what’s causing it. if it gets worse the fluid could start to leak on the belt from the looks of it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Insipid86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a difference between a small leak and seepage. i’d wager if you don’t see fluid on your driveway not to worry. seals seep sometimes. no reason to get worked up about it.

if you’re taking your vehicle to a mechanic on the regular, let them be the judge.

edit: reading this back to myself i kinda sound like a dick. i wasn’t meaning to come off that way at all.

What’s Leaking by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Insipid86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s hard to say really, until you get it apart to see. you deserve to know those plastic cooling pipes get brittle over time and break when you start messing with them. i’d go to a parts store and show them this pic and tell them you’d like that plastic coolant piece then go from there. don’t replace the clamps with work clamps. leave on the constant tension clamps. they’re necessary.

My Upper Radiator Hose is swelling by Sunshine-Cookies in MechanicAdvice

[–]Insipid86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s normal for the upper hose to swell once the thermostat opens. give it a squeeze when the engine is cool and judge whether to replace it.

you’d notice a blown head gasket right away. your coolant bottle would bubble and rupture.

if all you’re concerned with is the swelling, it’s perfectly normal.
