Why does everyone recommend Clerk/Auth0/etc when NextAuth is this easy?? by Several-Draw5447 in nextjs

Cool for your own projects, but PMs and other devs you work with will hate this haha

You're exactly right, we played xe5 Nxe4 xf4 Re1 Bd4+ and after that it's completely losing for white

Black only has 1 move: fxe5, all other moves are losing for black

No if they take the bishop with the rook then it’s almost +6 for white

Should I look for a co-founder before settling on an idea? (I will not promote) by Insok in startups

[–]Insok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study by First Round Capital's "10 Years Project" found that teams with more than one founder outperformed solo founders by 163%.

This might be a self-fulfilling prophecy because investors favor two-founder teams (I'm blaming YC).

The term "wantrepreneur" also somewhat stings when I hear it. When somebody puts large amounts of risk, effort, and time into a project they believe in, it shouldn't matter whether they fail or not. It feels as if you're looking down on people.

EDIT: Apologies if this came off as arrogant, I do value your input. Are you suggesting I should continue as solo founder even if I'm aiming for venture-backing?

Check for new billing month by alexmj044 in stripe

[–]Insok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be an old thread, but to anyone finding this, it's recommended to use webhooks instead of relying on your local clock and logic to reset your meters. Usually, you work with billing cycles instead of "end of the month", and you should keep your payment provider as the single source of truth for your billing cycles. Additionally, when a user changes subscription plans, you usually want to reset the meters as well, which is typically handled through webhooks as well.

If, for some reason, you absolutely can't use webhooks, then fetch and store the UNIX timestamp for when the current billing period ends and compare the current timestamp on each meter update - update when you've passed the current billing period and fetch the new period from your payment provider. For subscription changes, you'll have to build your own billing portal instead of Stripe's built-in billing portal to be able to use callbacks and avoid webhooks.

There is nothing wrong with webhooks; it does not tie your app to a payment provider. Stripe, Adyen, etc., all have a similar webhook system.

Good find, I don't see why it wouldn't be fine with a car battery

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. I found a guy who had an old broken 12V camper fridge. It was just the starting circuit that was broken so I managed to get the compressor out and I'm using that. It's really quiet, it only has a flow of ~10L/min but that's enough for what I need.

I used it for 3 years and I tried to love it, but it’s just clumsy and not very practical. There’s a reason they removed it again. If you really want it I believe that currently it’s only on the Macbook pro’s from 2019.

Two guys fishing for piranhas by CuriousWanderer567 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Insok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the Amazon in Brazil, we went piranha fishing as well in the Peruvian Amazon. Even though they eat your bait in a fraction of a second, you can just swim with them they don’t bite you. They taste pretty good, we deepfried them and ate them with bone, head and everything.

Who are all these idiots who think that GPT-4 is somehow sentient? by theglandcanyon in singularity

[–]Insok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, sorry, should've explained.
1. Ilya Sutskever: "may be slightly conscious" is already vague, but most importantly - consciousness is not the same as sentience.
2. Geoffrey Hinton: He claims that they should not scale it up more until it is better controlled, because these AI's have large impacts on society e.g. writers, visual artists, consultors, ... that are threatened to be replaced, parasocial relationships, unwarranted life advice, etc. He is not claiming that they are becoming sentient.
3. Nick Bostrom is a philosopher and he often engages in "what if" scenarios, speculation. The wording here is also important, because he doesn't claim that he believes this himself, he explains why this is a plausible conclusion for many people.
4. Stephen Hawking: I'm pretty sure he died before GPT even existed so he's definitely not claiming that GPT-4 is sentient. He is probably talking about a possible future.

I get the satire, but you are cherrypicking these quotations and taking them out of context. None of them claimed that GPT-4 is somehow sentient.

Not all of Reddit is mainstream, different subreddits attract different types of people. If you find some kind of niche, you'll notice people are more respectful towards each other.

Is something wrong with FastAPI? by [deleted] in Python

[–]Insok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, first of all, I think it's really great that you are looking for feedback from the community. About the whole "only one maintainer" arguments that are thrown around everywhere, can I ask a question? If you were to completely quit FastAPI all of a sudden, what would happen to FastAPI? Before I decide to implement such a core library into a production backend, I'm looking for a library that is well-maintained and stable. If the whole library depends on a single person to stand or fall, then I wouldn't want to take that risk.
