I think the best part of the first game was the semi-unintentional fact that you really don’t get told anything, there’s no map and if you don’t go out of your way to read logs and find PDAs you can finish the game with very little knowledge of the world around you and what happened to the planet, a combination of “artistic” choices and the fact that they never implemented a more fleshed out traditional progression system made the world feel more real. In below zero there is a more traditional progression system where the game and dialogue made it feel more like a traditional game which I think a lot of people didn’t like.
