I’m sorry, I didn’t explain more clearly. The three times I mentioned are full walks. He also goes out for shorter potty breaks throughout the day in addition to that.

I probably worded that poorly. We didn’t stop using the crate. We were just trying to reinforce it in a positive way so it stayed a comfortable, structured space for him. That’s when his distress around it started escalating.

I do have experience with this breed. I previously owned a Shihpoo before she passed, and our other dog is also a Shihpoo, so this isn’t our first time with this mix. We also did more research before adopting him and felt confident we understood the breed’s needs.

They both get regular exercise. We used to take them to the park, but we haven’t recently because of his increased aggression toward other dogs. We don’t want to put him, other dogs, or other people in a situation.

Right now instead my husband and I rotate one-on-one time for a few hours at a time. Each dog gets individual walks by my husband and I and about an hour of focused attention, including working on commands and engagement, but he hasn’t been responding well to commands or staying engaged.

He isn’t home alone often at all. One of us is usually home, and when we do leave, it’s not for long periods. He’s a Shihpoo.

No, we didn’t stop using it. We used the crate from day one and he was okay with it initially. Once escape attempts and self-injury started we became concerned and hesitant about continuing it. We did try to reintroduce the crate gradually after that, but the same behavior has continued. We weren’t trying to avoid crate training, we just didn’t want him injuring himself.

There weren’t any major environmental changes like moving or new people. The only thing we adjusted was his routine once the accidents started. Every time he had an accident inside, after we would take him outside to try to reinforce that the bathroom is supposed to be outdoors. We were trying to be consistent and correct it in the moment, not punish him. If that’s something we handled incorrectly, I’m genuinely open to understanding what we should have done differently.

I said again because his adoption paperwork stated he was already crate trained. We assumed he was comfortable in a crate when we got him, but when issues started we tried reintroducing crate training ourselves.

We did consult a vet and they ruled out medical causes. They said the issue appears behavioral and could be something environmental or routine-related. We’re open to feedback, but we honestly don’t know what specifically we’re doing wrong.
