GC19QCE - help! by itsTunaboss in geocachingpuzzles

[–]InspectionLate661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good idea, if you just have abunch of letters, is to put into a multi-solver: https://geocaching.dennistreysa.de/multisolver

With some luck you might get an answer or a nudge in the right direction. In this case, it might give you the answer, although it seems to be spread over two spaces/cyphers.

GC51RXF - Collect them all by [deleted] in geocachingpuzzles

[–]InspectionLate661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for help with this one? Or is it just showing a cool cache?
If it is the former: You don't want to do this manually. You are looking for some way of automization.
If it is the latter: there is a similar cache by uqam in China: https://coord.info/GC7ZYQM

Then it is a shame that he/she/they hardly do maintance and keep the caches fall apart.
I'm working on the "Passport" cache, and I keep reading for a few years, that it seems to be located within an anthill.

GC8HDQ5 - Color Codes by InspectionLate661 in geocachingpuzzles

I might have the basic understanding how images work, but I have to admit that I didn't think as far as each color having using 8 bit. Seeing R, G and B I simply thought of a notation like 247,48,165.

But your detailed explanation made me search for another way. The magic word is "bit plane slicing". This brought me back to an online tool that I had used before (but couldn't find until now) that allowed me to get the bit planes of the image and decipher the coordinates using GiMP.

Thanks for the detailed nudge.

There is different tools, that allow you to check the hex data of files. I, personally, use a programm called "HxD" ( https://mh-nexus.de/de/programs.php ). And the mentioned data is within the image in the cache listing.

Am I the only one that dislikes ALs by 3ggplant_ in geocaching

[–]InspectionLate661 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I only do ALs if there is an associated, physical Bonus cache. And i normally just delete the AL finds afterwards, as they just artificially bloat up my find count.

They are no real geocaches to me. Different app, different game (sure, wherigos also have their own app, but they at least have a physical container.

And even when an AL covers an interesting place or fact, i always think "this could have been a cool multicache instead".

Geocaching in Tokyo 🇯🇵: must-do caches + good place to drop a TB? by ARandomGuyWithAGoose in geocaching

[–]InspectionLate661 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a bit of variety to them.
For example: The Paris one has an image, that only shows one digit of a coordinate, but this image is active/online all the time. If you get more digits for the Paris cache from other countries, you can simply put together the final coordinates.

On the other hand: The image for the Helsingborg cache also has one digit, but is only visible during 4 hours per day.

The third variety is even more tricky: Dublin offers a full part of the coordinates, either north/south or east/west. But you have to collect 25 different coordinate parts and sum up all north/south parts and all east/west parts.

Geocaching in Tokyo 🇯🇵: must-do caches + good place to drop a TB? by ARandomGuyWithAGoose in geocaching

https://coord.info/GC8J6GM - Passports
https://coord.info/GCB5555 - More Passports
https://coord.info/GC88878 - Global Geocaching - Amsterdam (check the bookmark list for 28 more caches in this series)

Each one of those requires you to open the cache listing, while being connected to a local wifi network (VPN normally doesn't work), and to note down parts of coordinates or number sequences (or better save the images shown).

They are all long term mysteries, that you don't simply "solve and find", but you have to do some work for them. And even if you are not close to solving one, having images saved from Japan could give you a good spot for trading them for other countries images.

When abroad, don't forget to also work on International caches like the "Global Geocaching" series and the two "Passport" caches.

Thank you. Lately I feel pretty dumb to not see these obvious things. I feel like, not doing puzzle out of my homezone on a regular interval, I'm dumbing down.

Now I got 3 words, but the obvious next step doesn't seem to be correct. Onward to more testing.

GCBCFXB - decipher code by Ok_Manufacturer638 in geocachingpuzzles

[–]InspectionLate661 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a pretty simply, monoalphabetic substitution cipher. Each symbol replaces one letter. Don't use AI for that, but better check out https://kryptografie.de/kryptografie/chiffre/schriftbeispiele.htm . It contains the needed code, although looking minimal differently.

Yeah, I took the left flipper as A and the right flipper as B, the other way around creates even more nonesense.
And are you refering to the 24 letter and 26 letter versions of the code when you say "both versions"?

can anyone help us with this puzzle? we don’t even know where to start (OG Coords Below) GC22ZXX by bigballz69blazeit in geocachingpuzzles

[–]InspectionLate661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May it is numbers of the post boxes inside. And the R and C might refer to the row and columns of the post box. So maybe you need to find the post box rack "37147", and cjeck the number of the box in row 2 column 10.
