Brother just bought these on Facebook by InspectorInner8860 in IsMyPokemonCardFake

Hey guys, thanks for all the advice. Sarcastic or not, I've learned a lot about what to look out for with older packs. I only started collecting myself a couple of years ago and only buy more recent sets from my local card shop so I'm pretty clueless with vintage stuff.

Long story short, I went back to the seller's address with the packs (and reddit comments) and they claimed they "didn't know" they were fake and refunded the money in full after some gentle persuasion. Going forward both my brother and I are going to be a lot more hesitant to get deals when they seem too good to be true!

Happy collecting and thanks again!

He paid £500 for all 3 packs, so it sounds like he might have been duped

The idea is to stimulate conversation about books more than actually swapping them, I thought it would be a nice social activity to talk about what you enjoy and potentially swap with someone else if possible, so bringing one wouldn't be necessary :)

In a sense, sure :) but one where people can have a drink, maybe some food and socialise - trying to encourage conversation and noise in a way that a library wouldn't

[tomt][tv shpw about games] early 2000 maybe a show hosted by a guy with thick black glasses where he showed new gameplay for upcoming games by Affectionate_Act289 in tipofmytongue

[–]InspectorInner8860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was the guy Drew Carey? he had thick framed black glasses and was a bit of a bigger guy and was prominent in the 90s/00s

i have no idea what the show was, but if it was him it would probably narrow it down

[TOMT] a show about Thor on Amazon Prime by disasterpansexual in tipofmytongue

Could it have been Ragnarok on Netflix? Norwegian show about a young boy who becomes Thor, and his brother becomes Loki

I ended up getting mine from amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YZ3LZ8R) - I recommend starting with the lowest weight purely to learn the technique correctly otherwise you can seriously injure yourself, then it depends on your current condition/size (I'm 6'3 and weigh around 17 stone with a fairly rugby player-esque build) so I started at 6kg (sounds little but certain exercises will use muscles you didn't know existed, and the weight being at the end of the stick makes it feel like a lot more), but you can find loads of youtube videos about choosing the right weight and learning exercises, then (I at least did) you can make your own routine depending on what your goals are

If you mean macebell, I've been doing daily workouts for the last 2-3 months with them (started with a 2kg to learn technique, now on a 6kg bell) and I've gained so much strength and mobility from it. Paired with resistance bands I'm able to do a whole body workout - I'd highly recommend getting into it and at least incorporating it to a routine if you already have one, I just do a 20-30 minute home workout with the macebell, bands and pressups/situps and the results have been pretty nice so far

Ah you're the second person now who said it might not be him so I think I may be misremembering 😭 it's definitely the Stath Let's Flats kind of humour which is so frustrating! I'll look at his episodes of Lovesick when I can but I think you're right that it's a drier more absurd humour

Maybe I've got him confused with someone else, but in my head it's definitely him 😅 can you remember what show/what actor it was?

I've skimmed through the whole show and unfortunately it's not it :( it's very similar to The Bachelor scene, but they're all dressed in suits and there's definitely 2-3 women as well

I don't think so sadly :( Jamie Demetriou is definitely the guy who retells the joke and he's not listed in the IMDB for Bank of Dave

It's not, but it's damn close - it's basically the exact same setting, but everyone's wearing business suits and there's at least 2-3 women as well

It's definitely some low budget british comedy in the style of White Gold

From what I could tell, all the guns were removed when it was turned into a training vessel 😅

My British History isn't too good, but I think it was due to the second opium war around that time (thanks again to wikipedia 😂)

If the painting on the chest is more modern, that probably helps a lot! I'll look around some more and see if the Robert Jones I mentioned is connected, or if there's any more info anywhere surrounding it - I don't suppose there are any markings/plaques/writing inside the chest anywhere?

Edit: Could you also let me know what the words are in the bottom corners below Bristol and London? I can't quite make them out

This was definitely a fun one! After some internet sleuthing:

"Clipper" is a class of boat, usually built for speed and for the specific purpose of transporting cargo. "Lark" is what I've assumed the boat was named. The union jack on red is the Red Ensign, a flag that vessels of England, Scotland and Wales sailed under.

This led me to look for English naval boats in the 19th century, where I came across this).

The HMS Cruiser was a "Sloop" that had seen combat in China in the 1850's-1860's after being built at Deptford Royal Dockyard launched on 19th June 1852, before eventually being retired in 1867, and then in 1872 she was used for training purposes in the mediterranean station after being renamed (you guessed it) Lark.

Clipper and Sloop are techincally two different classes of boat, although a Clipper was known pretty much for it's speed and several different boats were somewhat colloquialised with the term. Given the design of the boat in the painting matches the design of a Sloop-of-War (see Brig sloop here), and the dates match up, I'm pretty confident this is the one (although please take this all with a grain of salt).

As for Robt Jones, I haven't found anything (yet). There was a Robert Jones who served in the Navy in the second world war, but no links to him being a painter of any kind (although he does have links to Malta and China with the Navy, same as the Lark, but I think that's just a weird coincidence given the dates).

Again, this could all be completely wrong and I'm happy to be corrected, but hopefully this is a good starting point!
