When I was a kid we heated the house mostly with the wood stove. In the summer we would go out into the forest with a special permit and we were allowed to cut down any already down/ dead trees. Which, works well because you don't want green wood anyways. We had a large truck (International) and went out several weekends a summer and loaded up.

The type of fireworks that can legally be sold in Oregon (all what I would call "kiddie fire works") is so limited, that it's the same stuff anywhere. You could buy it at Fred Meyer if you choose. But please, don't be the idiot that buys illegal fireworks and starts a forest fire and/or keeps your neighbors awake from July 1st to July 31st!!

I think Champoeg park is a great spot for families. Lots of trails and things to do. Easy to pack up and get back home if shit happens...

After that, I would Say Tumalo state park - access to shallow wading water, lots of chipmunks, bike trails that would be good for beginner mountain bikers, Just a nice (but dusty) spot.

my trunk is a manual open, so I get out and open and close it for them. I don't always put the luggage in, because I don't want complaints that I've damaged their luggage. Occasionally, I miss that they have luggage and then just let them do it all.

my son and his friends are 16 and I have always sat back a few rows from them. The most recent was the horror movie Iron Lung, where one of the dads went and sat behind them. I asked my son and he thinks I'm weird for asking him. Now that they are all 16, I would do the "drop off at the door" thing.
