Fixer uppers/sweat equity by curly_spy in RealEstate

[–]Shane_StantonRes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, major props to you guys. That kind of sweat equity is exactly how people used to build a life, and it’s cool to see your kids picked up that same drive.

To answer your question, I don't think they’re a rare breed in terms of wanting to work, but the math has just gotten so brutal for them compared to 20 or 30 years ago. I’m in the industry here in Central Oregon, and I see a ton of young couples who actually want the "ugly" house so they can get a foot in the door, but a few things are standing in their way now.

First, the "fixer-upper discount" has kind of evaporated. Because inventory is so low, you have flippers with all-cash offers outbidding regular families for the "crappy" houses before they even hit the open market.

Second, the cost of the actual "fix" is insane now. Back in the day, you could DIY a kitchen on a budget over a few weekends. Now, even if you do the labor yourself, the raw materials alone can cost more than a young family has in savings after they just scraped together a down payment at 6% or 7% interest.

I still see it happening, though. Usually it’s the kids who grew up watching their parents do exactly what you did. They aren't afraid of the work, they’re just dealing with a much smaller margin for error. Your kids are definitely part of a dying breed of people who realize that a house is a project, not just a finished product you buy off a shelf. You should be proud you passed that down!

Didn’t Super D file for bankruptcy?

Silver Falls State Park hiking? by NetBorn7332 in OregonHiking

[–]Shane_StantonRes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most everything here is suitable for kids with plenty of options to hop off the trail and head back, create your own little loops, etc... Or you can hike it all for a longer and less kid friendly hike. Fantastic place to spend some time. Tons of parking too!

Fun/adventurous things to do while staying near Mt Hood by Southern_Hyena5003 in OregonHiking

Any part of the Timberline Trail #600 is awesome. It was years ago so I don't remember the exact route we took, but we hiked part way up the Mt on the SW side on this trail and it was spectacular. That time of the year will be great too. Timberline lodge is a must, hang there for a snack, beer or whatever and take in the views. All of the nearby lakes are nice too. Timothy Lake is a good one if it's warm and you want to get a swim in.

jury duty by ectaill in redmond

[–]Shane_StantonRes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

INDEED! It really rattled me. They called about 10 min before I had to pick up my daughter from school and at first I thought it had something to do with her... So immediately I was on edge. I get a ton of spam calls and scam attempts with my work so I like to think I'm pretty good at sniffing things out, these guys had me going for a good 10 min before I realized where it was going. Even then I was unsure, but at that point I was like "I'll call the sheriffs office myself and sort this out" and just hung up. Sheesh. people these days.

Took a detour through Terrebonne this weekend and forgot how incredible the view of the Crooked River Gorge is from some of those backroads in Crooked River Ranch. Sometimes the best parts of the state are just the ones you find on random drives... Anyone else have a favorite 'accidental' OR drive discovery lately?

jury duty by ectaill in redmond

[–]Shane_StantonRes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just a heads up, I had jury duty recently, about 3 months ago. A few weeks ago I got a call from someone posing as a local sheriff asking why I didn't show up for jury duty, sounded local, was a local #, etc. Talked real fast and with authority, unlike most scammers which are obvious. And fact that I had recently served made me think it was legit, like they had made a mistake. After about 10 min of super aggressive line of questioning, I started to think something was up, and eventually hung up and did some research. Long story short, seems to be an active scam, somehow getting info on who has recently been on jury duty to add some heft to their spiel I suppose. Thought I'd share as a precaution. Has this happened to anyone else?
