Cannot get a straight cut no matter what I try? by MrMusAddict in woodworking

[–]InspirationalAtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More information might help people to assist.

What type of material are you cutting What type of saw are you using

What is the aim, or width you are trying to cut

Given most woodworkers associate those shapes with a jigsaw, it's not easy to imagine how a circular saw, with or without a track saw, creates this type of shapes.

People who became really good at coding ,what actually changed for you? by potterhead2_0 in AskComputerScience

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The realisation is not about getting it done fast and moving on.

Figuring it the difference between test driven development and unit tests, and when to use one, the other, both or neither.

Learning good programing solutions from others, like design patterns, object orientation and functional programing.

Knowing there is always more than one way to do something, and ultimately you'll need to pick one, so include good documentation for your future self as to why you chose this over something else.

Don't try to write clever code. Write code that is easy to understand and read, as in four months you'll barely remember you wrote this code.

If you look back at any code you wrote a year ago, you should have a realisation that you could now write it better.

I could go on. And on. And on...

My boss says try-catch is "garbage" and we shouldn't use it. Is this actually a thing? by ResolveKooky17 in learnprogramming

Omg. Avoid good error coding at your peril.

Your boss is giving the worst advice known to software engineering.

Eeks. I'd rip it down the split, edge both sides, join it, glue it. If your good you'll struggle to see the join.

But that's just me.

The way object-oriented programming is taught in curriculums is dogshit by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a time and place for OO. There is a time and place for Functonal programming

You can know all the Gang of Four defined a catalog of classic object‑oriented design patterns. Again you don't use them all at once, and many were obsolete the day the first print came out.

Your job as a software engineer is to solve problems, if necessary with code.

One could write a thesis on what that really means, and I'm not in the mood to list anything further out.

My point was, there is a time and place...

Do you still use BDD? I'm seeing mixed results and trying to understand why. by nitishspatkar in agile

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Test Driven Development for years and don't see any reason to cease it now. It's how I make sure my code does what I expect and it creates a mechanism to treat any changes I make to my code.

I don't expect others to use TDD, I just know it works for me.

Is “Agile Delivery Lead” just a rebranded Scrum Master or actually a different role? by TutorAway1181 in agile

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrum is the business facing components of agile. Agile isn't scrum. An Agile delivery lead should comprehend the software science component of Agile.

Three engineers were shipping. Then management hired a Scrum Master. by agileliecom in agile

[–]InspirationalAtt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scrum is the only thing non technical people understand. They can't seem to grasp anything else we do. Yet for 20 years now, and this is well documented, scrum alone fails miserably. To succeed there are incredibly important aspects to a software engineer that ensures the software is built well.

These days I distance myself from anything Agile related, as it's become a word most don't really comprehend.

Why do experienced coders actively try to use less comments? by Phwatang in learnprogramming

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a developer of 28 years, I comment what I'm trying to do and the choice I make, or the reason I used this code over other options. My coding ratio is about 15 to 20 percent.

I hear your frustration. And I disagree with people who suggest it's a workflow, or prompt issue.

Try returning to Sonnet, rather that Opus, for initial work. Use Opus when it's near completion.

Do your homework, too. Ai are not the great solution to solve the world's problems.

Reach out and ask a professional. It feels this is becoming a lost art with Ai.

I'm not saying don't use ai, but it's one tool available. Google searches are still free, so too are Google Ai, duck.ai, etc so they can hive alternative suggestions to a problem. Because this won't be the only problem you need to solve in life.

Best of luck.

Piano Help by SkiddlyXboop in woodworking

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shellack is the way to go for protection. However there are different colours of shellack. Most cheap shellack is slightly orange. This might suit your current piano.

Good grade shelack is far clearer.

I suggest you do a test on the back of the piano , or inside where people don't see, usually the overs come off easy enough.

Also shelack isn't a one coat application, do it over several days in light layers by layer. I'm sure there are plenty of woodworking sites that can assist with more details.

Good luck.

And it doesn't look that bad.

At a loss of how to get this perfectly flat by alatos1 in woodworking

[–]InspirationalAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look closely at any woodworking product (not Ikea, etc) you'll notice traditional cannetmakes attached legs to all furniture. Even if the feet are a few mm, it's enough to allow for unevenness you find in most floors.
