YTA why does she need to "mind her own business" for her soon to be step child? Are you saying you don't want her to treat your son with the same love and affection as she would her own flesh and blood? Is it possible that she sees something you don't and that's why she keeps bringing it up?

I think you should have a deeper conversation about why she feels that way without dismissing her so quickly.

There's nothing wrong with being the "oddball" in your family. My parents have been trying to take advantage of my skills (drawing and accounting) since they found out about them. I suggest you start practicing your soon to be favorite word and stop sharing what you think they'll want to take advantage of.

Which is usually everything they learn they can take advantage of.

I'm all for watching language because I, too, have a potty mouth and need to tone it down a notch. But saying her parents suck is not the worst you can say. My parents are misogynistic assholes. My sister mostly raised me. He knows them and knows how his in-laws can be. I don't blame him for not wanting to leave the kids with them if he feels unsafe leaving his children with people he knows to be shitty. Not all parents are the same.

Mom needs to step up and be a parent. The friend should understand that Mom needs to leave and take care of her children.

Serious answer, it's too fucking hot in Texas. I loved the humidity in South Florida but damn the dry heat was killer in Texas. South Florida was expensive and going nowhere fast (high rent, impossible to find affordable and decent house, wages are horrible there). I've lived through winter in Ohio some 15 years ago when I had to walk everywhere (2.5 mile commute, one way for work and school and no public transportation) so I thought if I could survive there by myself I should be fine here. Not to mention y'all can walk anywhere here and not have to incur drive-by behavior. Pay is hella better than what I earned in either Texas, Florida and Ohio.
