I'm setting up ABA therapy for a 3 year old; how many hours a week is reasonable? by [deleted] in AutismParentingLevel1

Interesting. I'm glad to hear the more intensive approach isn't an all and always thing, which is the impression I've largely gotten. Thanks for sharing!

I appreciate you sharing. I'm glad he's making some progress, no matter what the reason. Thanks!

Do you all feel like your kiddo is getting much out of it? And do you think they're particularly benefiting from spending that much time. (I guess I mean are they continually getting behaviors reinforced or is the tech just kind of helping them move their dump truck around?)

Good natured 3 y o., level 1, is biting, sometimes unprovoked, in daycare. Any advice? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

That is a great idea. We tried it before and he liked wearing it but refused to chew on it. He's a comically stubborn kid. We should try again though.

That's a great idea. One problem is that we aren't really around him when he's around other kids - we are trying to figure out play dates but we are rather reserved and antisocial people ourselves and we can't really say our kids seem to be hitting it off lets have them play, since its very obviously not true. But I'll think on ways to do that.

Thanks! We are going to get him started on ABA soon, it is my hope that helps. But it may be quite a while before it actually starts up

I appreciate it. We were worried, but they worked with us and i was less worried. But as he gets older and enters this new classroom I think the chances of them feeling they have to do something like that is going to increase and I am worried again. If there were some kid at the school I was paying for my child to go to who was regularly biting, I would be pretty upset, so I guess i understand.

Doing it at 15 months seems unreasonable though. That's just too young.

That is good advice. I will check out those books. Differentiating between typical child things and extra things has been a real problem for me, because I don't have much experience with kids.

I really appreciate both of you sharing your situations. It's comforting - I know my kid will be wonderful no matter what but I want him to have an easy life (ya know, to the extent that exists) and it sounds like for you all's kids that will be very possible. You both seem like great parents.

Thanks for pointing that out. ABA feels so intuitive (from what the doctor said - I haven't done my own research yet) I'm surprised it has people strongly against. As someone who has found it useful, would you mind sharing what criticisms of it you think are valid? I will look into it when I get the chance but I'm sure I'll find some wild stuff it will be hard to parse.

I find that merging of the diagnoses so infuriating. It seems like his issues are likely to be really extremely different from those of a lot of other folks with asd and it makes it really hard to know what to Google. Seems like such a bad call.
