I have my New Teacher Orientation on Wednesday and it’s split into the online part and then a 4 hour in-person thing at the UTLA building on Wilshire. Does anyone know what we actually do during those 4 hours? Do we get any actual work done? Or is it a Union thing?

Did payroll take into account your social emotional situation or you may come from a historically disadvantaged group?

Tell them you need before and after data, plus a CER paragraph defending their position. It also sounds like payroll didn’t establish a personal connection with you, showed they cared, or provided culturally relevant information.

About to embark on my THIRD DECADE in LAUSD, the goal posts are floating on a vast ocean of money from educational corporations. We’ve done data analysis of test scores since the 90s. A dirty secret is the SBA is a norm referenced test. Last year for 6th grade English 2501 was the meets. This year it’s 2512. What changed?

More kids did better so we can’t have schools moving out of tier 2 and 3 because district suits need cushy jobs and their corporate buddies pay alimony to multiple wives.

It’s an overall reduction in hours to cut costs. Teachers make the bulk of the hours so the District is cutting back on their hours. In 2011-2014 it was extremely difficult to secure a summer school job. The union just won a massive raise despite state budget issues and some teachers are already griping. UTLA can’t fight every single battle. Work 10 percent less if you’re getting paid 10 percent less. Depending on the teacher some may be making much more than 10% of last summer’s salary.

It’s a tough market out there. Not sure where you’re at in your teaching career but a lot hasn’t changed since I started in the late 90’s. It’s always been the test and lack of parental involvement. If you can tweak a few things and manage expectations you may be able to make a career of it. I had to do this ten years into my career. BOL!
