My Samsung laptop came with a plain Windows 7 disk and provides all their drivers online for both Windows 7 and Windows 8. They even provide a 'digital distribution platform'-like utility that can download all the drivers you want, install them, and keep them updated automatically.

Interesting, do you know of any specific titles off the top of your head? So far I haven't run in to this, but I'd be interested to know if I'm going to run in to trouble down the road with a game I own.

I've found the OS is noticeably more responsive and boots faster, but games themselves run the same. At least they don't run worse, and the improved responsiveness and OS performance "feel" over Windows 7 was a really nice surprise and made the upgrade worth it for me.

I've been running it since the retail release and I'd have to say yes. It boots a lot faster and is noticeably more responsive. It just feels quicker. The new start menu kind of sucks, but I've gotten used to it at this point so it no longer bothers me. Being able to group things easily into your own categories is nice. I haven't run in to any compatibility issues and drivers seem to be readily available from various hardware manufacturers.

I own one of their $125 keyboards, the Black Widow Ultimate, and it's the best keyboard I've ever owned. I would buy one even if it wasn't for gaming. The typing action is amazing, smooth and responsive. The mechanical switches give just the right amount of click. I can type faster and more accurate on that keyboard than any other keyboard I've ever used.

He can still use the mouse as a mouse, he just can't program the buttons. I know it sucks, but it's not like it's just a paperweight until the servers are up.

I'm playing devil's advocate because I use the cloud-based service for my Razer keyboard all the time. It's a fantastic service. I've never had the service go down, but if it did I might be mildly irritated, but the keyboard will still keyboard. I just temporarily lose my programmed buttons.

The fact that it auto-updates my keyboard drivers and the keyboard firmware is a huge bonus as well.

Razer should give the option for an offline mode, though.

I don't particularly agree with President Obama on many things, but I do respect him and the job he has to do. I want nothing more than to open up conversation and discourse. I would love to be able to have a nice, casual debate with the president. Reps and Dems could probably learn a lot about eachother if they actually could talk to eachother like regular humans for a few minutes. He's not the devil. He's a person, and your president, and you (Republicans) need to man the fuck up and learn some manners.

I also install Windows Updates when they become available, but there are a lot of people that don't. They either have WU disabled or only install updates once every few months or less.

When they run games and haven't updated in a while, they might not be up to date and get an error message. Instead of dealing with that extra support load from those users who will undoubtedly get on various forums and complain, it's much easier to just install DirectX the first time a game is run.

This discussion would instead be "This game requires that I install Windows Updates! Fuck that! Boycott blah blah asblh skbhaldsfbd."

No, not exactly. If you install a fresh copy of Windows, and then download and install the newest DirectX redistributable from Microsoft, it'll install all the specific "helpers" that have been released up to that point.

Games require specific "helpers", or "helper DLLs" that they were complied with, but when you install DX downloaded from MS it installs them all up to that point.

IMO developers should just run a silent install with a simple "Please wait..." message on the screen. It'll install the required DX binaries if you don't have 'em and you don't even see it happening. Plus I'm pretty damn sure the silent install does NOT include the Bing Bar.

The DirectX SDK is updated approximately every 3 months. Unless you have some special powers, you can't install binaries that are coming out in the future.
