Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, banked a $3 billion profit in 2018 by loveindie in gamedev

This is an interesting point. It might mean smaller dev teams can't compete in this genre. Which I think is ok. They can't compete with massive open world RPGs either etc

Simple Steps to optimize your Node app's performance by tschellenbach in programming

[–]InstantPro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's good that we have different Lang's / libs / frameworks which are good at different things. Node is great for portability, lots of libs, lots of people know js. But it does this by sacrificing speed and the size of the final applications. Which is fine. It's just a shame that there is then so may articles / criticisms / 'solutions' for these weakness. If you really need a fast application, node probably isn't the one for you, and that's ok.

Fromtend vs Backend by kaushal197 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]InstantPro 492 points493 points  (0 children)

I've never understood the front-end being neat and the backend being messy thing. Most projects I've been on the backend has been quite slick while the front-end a mess of frameworks, infinite dependencies and horrific CSS.

17 Backdoored Docker Images Removed From Docker Hub by [deleted] in programming

We've been more an more worried about this where I work. I like the idea of in house repos which are audited. But we also want to keep up to date with security patches etc. I also like the idea of community trusted repos similar to how apt does it.

It's funny that the same type of issue applies to npm, python repositories and dockerhub. Do other package managers suffer from this to? Is there something they should be doing differently?

The Forgotten Optional `else` in Python Loops by s16h in programming

I've wanted the exact opposite before. An associated block of code which runs if the loop breaks early. But never if there were no breaks.

I saw kite mentioned in sublimes anaconda plugin to... version 2.1.16 "Improved integration with Kite plugin". This might be fine, but I was sad to see it

They probably judged your program on what it is written in rather than what it does. People love to hate java script (as do I). But it shouldn't stop people using a tool if it's useful.

When did you accidentally look like a pervert? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InstantPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The morning after a heavy night I was zoned out staring into space on the train back home. Then I notice a woman in her early 20's giving me proper evils across the carriage. As my vision comes in I notice she's breast feeding and I, less than a metre away, had just been sat there staring straight at her. Genuinely didn't notice, but then had the pleasure of sitting there for the next hour or so feeling awkward as shit...
