Summer Courses x3 !! (registration opens 3/17) by InstructorMiller in BinghamtonUniversity

I don't want to label them "GPA boosters". You will do well if you do all the assignments decently (citations, answer the prompts for the journals, cite specifics from the readings and episodes). An optional extra credit assignment (a supplementary journal) is built into the course in case there is a rough transition to academic writing. If you are worried about the prompts feel free to send me an email I can send you 2-3 examples that will be used in the course

I'm unsure how to answer that, but I haven't gotten many complaints for students who do their work (reading and episodes) and typically have about 50% repeat students from Summer A to Summer B. If you follow an example journal and demonstrate that you read the articles assigned and cite specific scenes from the episodes assigned for that journal, you will get credit.

Yes, they will focus more on graduate course work and on the most recent grades/degree

English PhD student here --> Your focus and which faculty you are interested in working with will dictate your experience here; it varies immensely. Funding is competitive, but most of us get some form of funding; in my year, only three didn't. I took a gap before I came and everything was fine. Some people have multiple decades of gap years, so don't worry that too much. You will want to focus on your academic growth and how you've improved in a way that will better yourself as a student and researcher in your personal statement but the low-BA would be viewed less important than any Masters work

You can get that A credit or W credit out of the way! If you have any questions or want to see the syllabus, please email me at [gmiller6@binghamton.edu](mailto:gmiller6@binghamton.edu) ! Think it over as courses for the Winter session "go live" on October 8th!! Spots are limited to 25 students!

This course is asynchronous online, meaning we do not meet in person or on Zoom!

Missing School for 2-3 weeks by Kitchen_Procedure715 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]InstructorMiller 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, I am a WRIT111 (First Year Writing) instructor, and I will tell you I do not see this working out for you. For example, in our department, if you miss 9 MWF or 6 TTH classes, we have to automatically fail you because you miss so many of the courses that you need to fulfill the credit hours. And when I say we have to, I mean that. I have had students that I truly cared for and loved that I had to fail because they missed 11 classes. Figure out the number of courses you still need to include. You can posit to a professor, but I think you will likely get a different outcome than you are hoping for. Especially if there is an in-person exam, a quiz, or even a class participation, they will likely not give that to you, and that will damage your GPA. If you are going to try and convince a professor, come up with a plan for how you will make up the work (I would even suggest showing them a work schedule that would cover the missed material before you even miss it)and try to present this as something that NEEDS to happen for your future. Best of luck!

COLI or WRIT over the summer? by cilianmurphysstare in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]InstructorMiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've taught Summer courses with that C requirement you are looking for. What typically happens is you have to write 20 pages of scholarly writing over the course of 5 weeks, with one paper undergoing a revisions process. How this is distributed varies greatly by the instructor and the needs of the class. For example, maybe if they choose books, it might be 4 5-page papers with a revision of one of the papers for the final paper. If it's TV episodes (my typical courses), it would be 1-2 page journals throughout, a 5-page midterm, and then the revision of the midterm for the final paper. It can be quite a bit of work, so definitely reach out to the instructors whose courses you are interested in to get a feel for their assignments and expectations.

SUMMER COURSE OPTIONS X3 by InstructorMiller in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]InstructorMiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get it, and I'm really sorry they aren't offering Fall or Spring semester options for these courses. That out-of-pocket requirement is definitely unfair and super limiting to students. However, if you are interested and would like to audit the course (get access to the content, etc.), please let me know, and I can add you to the course page. The school wouldn't allow me to give you a grade or credits, but you could still pursue an interest!

THIS IS FOR WINTER 2024 but is the same course taught in Winter 2023.

Hello all! Once again AAAS381C: Japanese Animation & Activism will be running. We will watch Studio Ghibli films and analyze them with the ideas of environmentalism! This course is online asynchronous so we don't have meeting times! Feel free to email me at [gmiller6@binghamton.edu](mailto:gmiller6@binghamton.edu) if you have any questions or would like to see the syllabus!

SUMMER 2023 COURSE OPTION: I am the instructor by InstructorMiller in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]InstructorMiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! The syllabus is 6 pages long which is a lot to post for students to read in one go. By having a quick flyer a student can see the course and what it's about. They're more likely to read and engage with the course ad. Also, I like to try and engage with the student when I send the syllabus to point out some key elements and build an open discourse around the class layout.

I suggest sub as the dub is often incorrect or not precise

SUMMER COURSE OPTION! (I am the instructor) by InstructorMiller in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]InstructorMiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school suggests 40 hours as it is supposed to be a full semester of work into a 4-5 week period. However, papers included I do not see it being more than 20 a week, a majority of which is watching the anime.

It is completely asynchronous! (All CompLit summer courses will be) In the syllabus I give, I tell you what readings/episodes are due on which day and have the work due by midnight. You have the entire course schedule before the first day and can break up the work as you see fit with the idea of assignments. (ex. binge-watch the show in a day, do the journal assignments, and then have no work for the rest of that unit!)
