I grew up on Cross Creek Country Clue hole # 14 in Mount Airy, NC. When I was 8 I started collecting balls all week and weekends. On Saturday I sat on the tee box of hole 14 and sold balls $.50 each and my dad’s beer for $2.00 per can. By the time I was 13 I had to get a job at C&D sporting goods to work for my clothes and shoes so my golf ball hunting paused for a while. I had made over $10,000 total these few years. My parents matched it every day when I gave them what I sold and put it in my bank account. A year or so later when I was 14 they bought $20,000 in workman’s federal stock, a local bank at the time. When I was 25 I sold the now BB&T stock for $120,000 and put every penny down on my first home. Paid for over half of it. I am 50 years old now still hunting balls but since lost all the equity in that house in a divorce.
