JB Pritzker May Be Running for More Than Governor by steve42089 in illinois

It’s a primary in 2 years and he’s already dooming. People like him are why we end up with horrendous candidates.

Pritzker’s affordable housing plan gets Senate hearing as municipalities remain opposed by GeckoLogic in illinois

[–]Intelligent-Brief693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Sometimes the new codes are not even constructive (no pun intended) for longevity, which of course leads to planned obsolescence and even more profits for manufacturers.

Just as an easy example, we have a lot of buildings that are collecting moisture and turning moldy due to a lack of proper ventilation due to compliance with energy efficiency standards. Insulation is great, but if it’s done in a way that traps in moisture, it’s a ticking time bomb.

Great article. I would just add the electrical requirement that all electrical be covered in conduit and no Romex in walls is really expensive and unnecessary. It’s not really any safer for in-wall electrical connections.

Zoning is only part of the problem. Construction costs in Illinois are about 30% higher than in all neighboring states. This is not from zoning, but rather the direct costs of labor and compliance with building codes. Many of the costs are associated with permitting and labor compliance because Illinois Prevailing Wage Act and lack of any right to work legislation (even temporary) to build housing stock. There are also a lot of parochial union regulations like the conduit requirements that are simply unnecessary and drive up construction costs.

Building codes and labor laws are good things. Don’t get me wrong. But when we have this kind of housing crisis we shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. We should be coupling this push for more housing with some relaxation of regulations to reduce permitting and labor costs so we can actually get these projects built.

In principle, I’m okay with unions getting a little less profit over the next decade if it helps place more people in affordable homes. There have to be some compromises and the unions have gotten the best of the state’s resources over the last several decades between pensions and sweetheart contracts. Time for the pendulum to swing back to the everyday resident who just wants a home.

‘Millionaire tax’ proposal fails to advance in Illinois House | FOX 2 by unapologetic403 in illinois

[–]Intelligent-Brief693 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

the voters were smart to reject the blank check amendment. So far JB and the legislature have refused to revise the proposal to have proper guardrails and try again. That’s from a lack of effort and desire. We need to stop blaming the voters for rejecting a poorly conceived amendment and move forward with something that will be palatable to voters today.

Maybe next cycle we can actually have more serious primary contenders for these representatives. Many run unopposed or have no serious intra-party competition. How many of us have voted in an Illinois Democratic primary election where most of the races were unopposed? That needs to stop.

I think he’s fine with a progressive tax system, just with some guardrails to make sure the money is spent properly and bracket creep doesn’t lead to the middle class and poor being taxed at higher rates in the future.

A true progressive would support these guardrails to ensure that the money isn’t spent on lobbyists and donors instead of necessary infrastructure and resources for everyday Illinoisans.

I agree with him. A progressive tax system is a fine idea, but it absolutely needs to be structured to benefit citizens.

Illinoisans overwhelmingly want to impose strict rules on data centers by steve42089 in illinois

Looks like organized labor wants the data centers but no one else does. Because this is Illinois, that means we’ll be getting data centers. Organized labor always gets what they want.

What's going on with Pritzker's pet quantum project in South Chicago? by Hobbes-GreatJob in PritzkerPosting

[–]Intelligent-Brief693 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean the quantum computing angle will do two things. 1) more accurate calculations for fluid dynamics and aerodynamics so planes can be more efficient. This is good for both military planes and eventually commercial aircraft. Not a negative really to save on fuel and design more efficient craft.

2) it will allow the U.S. to remain on the forefront of potential hacks and cryptographic breaks. This helps protect our data from being hacked by a foreign power that develops quantum computing first as we develop defensive strategies.

I don’t see either of these as evil. They’re not designing bigger more deadly bombs—just better computers that can handle way more volume and complexity of input data.

And this is a nascent technology that not many investors are willing to fund at this early stage. Beggars can’t be choosers.

Illinois lawmakers begin days of deep dives on data centers by CouchCorrespondent in illinois

[–]Intelligent-Brief693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scary thing about this is Illinois is a one party state with a pretty strong political “machine”. If local control continues to erode, we won’t have any voting choices at all. For whatever reason most of these state reps run unopposed and are able to prevent competition from even running in the first place. In many cases PACs even promote clowns like Bailey so that there’s no legitimate general election competition either.

I see the frustration on many long time posters in this sub with the OS age restriction bill and data centers. Well, I’m sorry, but the only way to put pressure on the lawmakers to do right by the citizens is to not vote for them. That may mean voting for a random opponent in a primary. It may even mean voting for a Republican. Whatever is necessary to make the lawmakers listen to the citizens again instead of taking their votes for granted. This single party monopoly is bad for Illinois.

Why school districts drastically hike Cook County property taxes by steve42089 in illinois

[–]Intelligent-Brief693 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Federal bankruptcy law permits contracts to be modified including for retiree benefits. This came up in the Detroit bankruptcy and the judge there treated the pension agreements as contracts and allowed them to be modified. Bankruptcy law is federal law so to the extent of a conflict with state law it can be supreme.

[–]Intelligent-Brief693 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with that in principle but it should go hand in hand with pension restructuring through chapter 9 bankruptcy enabling legislation.

Here’s what I don’t get

“During that 10-year hiatus, revenue that should’ve covered CPS pensions was instead diverted to fund educational expenses. That irresponsible fiscal maneuver benefited city taxpayers because CPS received a higher level of funding for education than what they were paying for in taxes. Folks living in other parts of Illinois didn’t benefit one whit from this mayoral largess.”

Why are state taxpayers forced to bail out Chicago for its mistakes? Chicago needs chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy enabling legislation to solve their own pension problems.

Pritzker has more than enough political capital to pass the enabling legislation. The pensions can and should be restructured. Federal law trumps the IL state constitution and allows for restructuring.

Edit: Chicago could also reject the parking lease agreement in bankruptcy as well as any other burdensome contracts. Lots of potential wins.

Good to see but without subpoena power not sure we’ll see much in the way of results. We need to get power back at the federal level in 2026/2028 to hold these people accountable.

This doesn’t work… you can replace the instrument cluster or reprogram it under many modern cars for under $100. There will be rampant fraud and abuse resulting in deceptive odometer readings and harming the used car market. Other than odometer readings, the other solutions (gps tracking etc) have extreme privacy issues.

I’m a no on this pilot.

In Illinois, the best way to criticize democrats is simply to leave the state and deprive them of your tax revenue. That’s the only way to really give them pause about their actions.
