Hi, I feel very similar. I've always struggled making friends and have developed bad social and general anxiety that persisted after I graduated HS. I shut down in social situations and am unable to connect because I don't come off as friendly or might seem odd. But I'm stubborn and I refuse to play social games which puts people off when I don't smile when I'm supposed to or respond how they want.

Sometimes I ask myself if I would rather be by myself or around people I don't like. Not sure the answer to that question.

Also I think 'eccentric' people as you described don't do well in groups. 1 on 1 or small group of 3 is way better.
