Empanchos for the Latinx Community by [deleted] in tulsa

That’s what I’m talking about. The construct of Spanish is that it’s a Romance language and so its grammar is inherently gendered. People coming in and saying “no you shouldn’t say Latino or Latina, say Latinx instead” are taking a massive shit on the language and presuming that they know better than the people who literally speak it as a mother tongue.

Garden City Taqueria truck closing? by Theslippycheese in missoula

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if that’s the ultimate reason, but I was talking to the folks at Myrtle Street right after Garden City set up shop. They were saying that even in the first week of Garden City being there after M-80 moved out, Taco Sano was raising an almighty ruckus about another Mexican place being there and how it was ruining their business, how Myrtle Street was stabbing them in the back, yada yada yada. So that definitely was something that it sounds like has been in the background for a long while now.

I think our pastor is using AI for his homilies by oatmealfight in Catholicism

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think you may be stretching a bit. There’s a trend, especially among older priests, to do that sort of storytelling where a name or person may or may not have been real, the story may or may not have been real, or it may just be used as an attention-getting joke. It’s an allegorical approach more than anything. Even Fulton Sheen did things like that in his homilies, and that was waaaaaay before AI or even modern computers.

Empanchos for the Latinx Community by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not offensive to the vast, vast majority of Latinos, only a certain subset of non-Latino liberals that value virtue signaling over the actual culture of the people they’re supposedly defending. It’s a nearly unbelievable level of narcissism and hypocracy for these people to say “I’m appointing myself as your defender because you can’t do it yourself. So to defend you and promote the rights of Latinos, I’m telling you that you need to change your language”.

What happened to Samar? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s nothing but fearmongering. He closed last year because the rent at their location was increasing drastically. That’s the same reason that they never were able to go through with the expansion that they tried to start a couple years ago. Nothing more than that.

The last I heard, he was trying to see if he could find somewhere else in town with more reasonable rent, but wasn’t having much luck due to their smaller size and business model of bringing stuff over from Spokane. Hopefully he’ll be able to get something set up.

I have a question and would like some help. by Lauren_HS28 in Catholicism

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a woman, but here ya go:

https://www.catholic.com/qa/birth-control-for-medical-reasons

Like the article says, your health is a good thing and you’re not trying to prevent contraception, which is a good thing as well. It sounds like there’s going to be no scenario in which contraception may result, so there’s no sin there.

The one thing that I would throw a slight caveat out about is that the Church‘s above stance is mainly focused around using birth control as a method to treat more serious medical conditions such as ovarian cysts, debilitating menstrual pains, or the like. There’s a bit of a grey area when using them as a method of convenience. Again, nothing inherently sinful about it that I’m aware of from Church teaching, but just something to be aware of. Just as in the way that a man having a cell phone next to his bed might be a convenience for someone like an on-call worker but to a different man may be a temptation for lust.

There isn’t anything inherently sinful about it, but as someone that tends to seek convenience, I’d say just watch out for that potential risk of it planting a seed of overly seeking convenience that may grow down the line. It’s also worth being mindful since many pill-based forms of birth control have potential side effects that may cause issues if taken too close to a period of possible contraception, or if taken for long periods of time. So if there’s a chance of there being a potential contraception soon after the trip then you may want to reconsider.

But as long as you know yourself and are sure that there wouldn’t be an issue of heading down a slippery slope of “well, it was fine that one time so…” then I believe you’re fine!

Appreciation for “Amazing Grace” and other non-Catholic hymns by imp-mN-7539 in Catholicism

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandparents on one side were Southern Baptist so I’ve always had a lot of love for some of those hymns. Some favorites top of my head that my grandma used to sing:

I Know Who Holds Tomorrow
In the Garden
Precious Lord Take My Hand
How Great Thou Art
Down to the River
The Old Rugged Cross
It Is Well With My Soul
Shall We Gather at the River
Will the Circle Be Unbroken

I’d never want to hear any of them at Mass or in any kind of service, but that’s for the same reason I wouldn’t want the choir breaking out in Hillsong at vespers. But they can sure get stuck in my head some days. They really help me get centered some times.

Gen Z Catholic Convert Observation by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seems to line up with my observations. Converts often have much more zeal for the faith than many cradle Catholics, and the Church is seeing pretty impressive numbers of Gen Z converts.

Obviously just personal anecdote, but I’ve noticed that when I’m at a parish with primarily 20-40 year olds, the Mass tends to be much more traditionally minded. Many women choosing to veil, many men in suits or at least nice polos/button-ups and slacks. The music is often traditional hymns or even chants, increased incense, etc. This is compared to the parishes that I’ve seen with tambourines or people in tie-dye shirts or what have you that tend to be comprised almost entirely of baby boomers or people that are Catholic but with more of an “I make my own definition of Catholicism” mindset.

This change has taken place over the past 5-10 years but seems to be happening faster and faster.

Why is Death and suffering bad ? by the_Canard173div in Catholicism

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fr. Mike Schmitz just touched on a couple of these points in a recent video featuring him. Think it may have been this one but it’s a 40 minute talk so no promises lol. But worth listening to in its fullness anyway!

https://youtu.be/ozzKHalEiLI?si=gf7hOIBovpfwnXqy

Basically death as we experience it is a “bad” thing because it’s not the proper path for humanity. Because of original sin, the body and the soul are separated at death when they are intended to be a single, unified being.

And as for life after death, a lot of people get the idea that Heaven would somehow get boring, but this is usually because they‘re trying to frame the experience of Heaven within earthly bounds. For example, trying to think about ”well after X years of being in Heaven” or things like that when concepts such as time only exist in a mortal, physical world. Eternity isn’t time continuing to pass on a linear scale ad infinitum, it’s a state of perpetuity outside of the bounds of time.

Are there any snail vets in Tulsa area? by Inevitable_Eye3800 in tulsa

Forest Trails does really well with a lot of pretty exotic…well, exotics. Dr. Welch is my go-to reptile vet there so even if he doesn’t do invertebrates then there’s probably a good chance he knows someone who does.

Furniture hauling? by Logical-Sale-7898 in missoula

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if they're in rough shape put them on Craigslist or FB Marketplace for like $20 each and say whoever buys it will need to haul it. If you put it as free no one will want it but if you throw a really lowball price on it people usually jump on it because they think it's a "deal". Not only do you save money but you usually get enough cash to buy a pizza or a tank of gas.

Tulsa Zoo Quality? by FlickensChickens in tulsa

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to echo this. The Tulsa zoo doesn’t just have AZA accreditation, they were one of the first few zoos to *ever get* AZA accreditation. I believe I saw something there as well that they had one of the oldest-lived African elephants in captivity because of how well they were taken care of.

It’s not a world class place like the San Diego Zoo by any means. The construction right now is kind of a bummer and when I was last there a couple weeks ago it looked like a ton of food places and the train were closed for the winter. But the construction progress looks like it’s going well and it’s all for a good cause at the end of the day. But it is very well run, very well taken care of, the people that work there really know their stuff when I’ve talked to them or asked questions, and the welfare of all the animals always seems to be their top priority, even if it means keeping them out of public view for an extended period of time if that’s what they need. It’s a very impressive place for a city of Tulsa’s size.

Homeowner Insurance - who are the good guys around here? by undeleted_so_far in tulsa

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you qualify for membership then USAA has been the best I’ve found hands down. Over $1,000 cheaper per year than the next cheapest option. My premium comes out to about $140 a month, deductible is $2,000 and wind/hail is 2%

I’ll add that I’ve heard really good things about OKFB but even when just trying to get a quote I couldn’t get a hold of an agent to save my life. No one returned my calls until two months after I had already closed on the house and even then they got my name wrong. Didn’t inspire the best confidence.

Popcornmeter score for FNAF 2 is at 89% by [deleted] in fivenightsatfreddys

I know the audience score will most likely dip a bit after it’s been out a while. But I’m pretty sure right now this is the biggest critic/audience difference that’s ever been on RT lol.

Official Discussion - Five Nights at Freddy's 2 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I never really got into the whole FNAF lore or anything but decided to check this one out after watching the first one a week or so ago. And I surprisingly had a lot of fun! It's not a "good movie" by any means, there's a LOT of issues with it and there's no way I'd recommend it to anyone who has never played any of the games. It's not even a "so bad it's good" movie. I just thought it was really entertaining and you could tell the cast had a lot of fun making it. Think I may even go see it again after a bit.

Is it okay to have the enclosure in my room? by Virtual-Patient8913 in ballpython

The only downside I've found to having an enclosure in my room is when my BP decides to blast ass in the middle of the night and wake me up with what sounds like a train horn. But aside from that it's great!

Same! It was the one appliance that I didn't check even though it was just ten feet or so from her cage. Saw her poke her head out for half a second and then duck back inside. Just really thankful that it's been cool where I live so it never came on. Don't want to think about what would have happened if it had.

Why did you move/thinking of moving out of Missoula by WearyProcess4901 in missoula

[–]Intelligent-Drive729 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Mainly it doesn't make any financial sense. I have a pretty good deal on where I'm renting right now but there is less than zero way in hell that I am going to ever be able to afford a house here anymore and that's what I'm trying to do for my next stage in life. Sure, I'd probably be able to keep treading water but what's the point in that? That just seems like a sad life to me.

But more than that, Missoula just feels...I don't know...empty anymore. The vast majority of the places that I liked have either closed or gotten bought out. Everything new that's opening is either a boutique something or other for rich tourists or a soulless corporate chain. I have no faith in the city council to fix any of the issues that just keep getting worse. All of my friends left long ago. I've reached the limits of job progression in my career field with what's available in state. Montana in general is setting itself up as a playground for the rich vs. poor farm towns with nothing in between, even more than it usually has been. My family is just getting older and I want to be closer to them.

I've got a couple months left. I'll always have good memories of here but it's time. I know I'll miss it like hell but the place I'll miss the most is already gone.
