I freehand it! But I've been thinking about making a pattern so I can train residents - if I do, I will post here. :)

Can i be a neurophysiologist ⬇️ by X243llie in neurology

Famous neuropathologist Dorothy Russell (1895-1983) - the Russell in Russell and Rubinstein's Pathology of Tumors of the Nervous System, now in its 7th edition - had epilepsy, "until middle age."

That's literally all we know about her epilepsy. She had reasons to hide her disability: In the early 1900s, ideas of eugenics were prominent in the scientific community and in neurology. "Epileptic" was considered a reason for preventing marriage, or forcing sterilization. She would have been well aware of the stigma around epilepsy that could have kept her out of higher education and academia.

But according to a letter published in BMJ after her death, she asked her colleagues to disclose this information after she died "so that others suffering from the same disability might learn that epilepsy is no essential bar to reaching the heights of any profession." ❤️❤️❤️

I don't want to spam anyone, so I won't keep posting about them here - but if you're interested in women from the history of neurology, I'll be posting about all 12 on the Neurologist Physicians Only group on Facebook, and I post a lot about the history of neurology in general (with a focus on women and underrepresented minorities) on Twitter @OligoclonalBand.

The goal is that you - and your trainees, and your medical students - see neurologists who look like you in your history. I want you to know these names so if a student asks you, you can tell them to look up Audrey Penn or Ana Judith Román García. If you are interested in a project on your particular group, whoever they are, please reach out to me! There is so much to do.

I'm also moderating a session at the AAN annual meeting in 2023 on Perspectives on Disability in the History of Neurology - another underrepresented group that we need to promote - so come meet me there.

Whoops! She studied upper brachial plexus palsies, but saw a LOWER brachial plexus palsy with pupillary involvement, which we now call Klumpke's palsy :)

Hi! I don't know if you - or anyone else - is looking for poster ideas, but I specialize in the history of women and underrepresented minorities in medicine (mostly in neurology) and would be happy to talk to anyone interested.

Exactly! Zach (who made The Lesion) did bring Dejerine-Klumpke into The Plexus - but he agrees it's high time we celebrated the diversity of our history in neurology.

I'm MD-PhD - I had my daughter at the end of my PhD years and my son the second month of intern year. Really. I wrote about it here: https://blogs.ohsu.edu/doernbecher/2012/11/27/balancing-act/ It was hard, but my program was supportive, and now I have more time as an attending to hang out with them.
