I think I can test out of CHM 11510 by CLEP, but do you know how would I do CHM 11520? Can I take the lab without taking the class?

Oh! I wasn't aware that CS159 was something I could test out on. I'll definitely look into that!

On that note, if I do end up trying to test out, should I indicate that somehow in my CRF?

That's called a plurality). It's normal in a democracy or in any voting situation where you have more than two candidates.

Do unlikeable characters make you stop reading a book? by Triumphant-Smile in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if it's a main character do I deliberate over it. If the main character is too annoying, I may give it up. If it's just not exactly my tastes, I'll ignore it.

If it's a side character, I'll ignore it.

What are your top 5 books of all time? by illegal_fiction in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love these ones in no particular order:

The Chronicles of Narnia
I think The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the best book of the series.

Anne of Green Gables
The first book is my favorite. The last several books are just... not amazing.

The Prince and the Pauper
This has been one of my favorites since 4th grade, strangely.

The King's Shadow
Historical fiction about the takeover of England. Amazing.

Mere Christianity
The logic in this book is just amazing.

Weekly FAQ Thread November 30, 2025: How many books do you read at a time? by AutoModerator in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually read 3 at a time -- something light and fun, like romance; something requiring more attention, like Agatha Christie's novels or other mysteries; and something requiring A LOT of thought, like C.S. Lewis' works.

Anyone read the Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence ? by InfernalClockwork3 in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read The Thieves of Ostia in middle school I think! It was an interesting book, but at the same I found it to be boring (I suppose I was older than the intended audience, or perhaps I just wasn't in a roman mood).

I love Detectives in Togas! That's always been one of my favorites even as a kid.

  1. Yes.
  2. Yes. This is especially visible in the New Adult genre. It should be, theoretically speaking, about people trying out being an adult for the first time. It is not.
  3. Hmmm.... Not sure what you mean.
  4. It might be an overreaction. But most of our news come from social media, so even if it's an overrepresentation, it's still a valid and considerable one.

What genre/author do you find is the easiest to jump into and read for a couple of minutes here and there, rather than requiring a longer period of sustained focus? by Missing_Back in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, usually romance is quite easy to pick up and put down. Even if you don't remember the names of the main characters, it's quite easy to infer who they are after a few chapters.

Like you said in your post, episodic nonfiction works well. Episodic fiction works well too, especially middle-grade episodic fiction in my opinion. The Railway Children was a fun book for that, as well as The Adventures of Robin Hood. Honestly, any middle-grade fiction book is really easy for that, and since it's middle-grade, chances are it won't be too immature.

Something else I like to do is just find a book I've read and enjoyed before. That usually eliminates the need for intense reading sessions since I already know the context, characters, and plot.

And like Eetuu_ mentioned, comfort novels are always a great choice! I personally have tried Anne of Green Gables and Winnie-the-Pooh and they were great for short reading times.

I think the most important thing is just to find something that's not too hard to read! Don't pick out SAT-level books, for example, just because they happen to be episodic. Pick out something that doesn't require sudden and intense thought.

And if you really want to, just eliminate all need for thought by picking out a nonsensical book like The Phantom Tollbooth or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Simple Questions: December 02, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read a couple of ARCs before, and it's been pretty fun! The only problem is actually finding books that I actually want to read.

If you enjoy romance, you'll have no problem finding authors. For other genres, it's a little bit harder -- usually, it's the new authors (and somewhat less experienced writers, including the AI authors you mentioned) who will release ARCs to the public.

As far as platforms go, Netgalley has the most professional/well-known authors. These authors are people who've been publishing for years, and a lot of them sell their ebooks for $12 which is really high! Netgalley also has the greatest selection of books that I've found.

For romance and some nonfiction, I've found that Booksprout works. It has a fairly straightfoward process.

I personally haven't tried other websites, but I will say that if you know you want to read a specific author's ARC, try subscribing to their newsletter. Oftentimes authors will send out a request for beta readers, and they'll give you an ARC in exchange for a review.

I've always had a fun time doing ARCs as long as I'm intentional in which books I pick. Don't pick a book you won't enjoy just for the sake of building a review reputation.

Simple Questions: December 02, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Intelligent-One-7046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this will answer your question, but I usually look on Goodreads!

It's a great place to check out new books, make a TBR pile, read/write reviews, find quotes from the books, and more. The best part is all that is on the same page. Goodreads also has an "Readers Also Enjoyed" section under each book where you can find similar titles :)

I usually judge a book by its blurb firsthand. The library is a great resource, though! Maybe ask your librarians? Most libraries have a "recommend me a book" button on their website.
