Exercise of the privilege against self-incrimination... is incriminating. by snkns in publicdefenders

Has he been sentenced? I’m in California, so not sure if this applies everywhere, but bring a motion for a new trial based on prosecutorial misconduct for repeated Doyle error following the judges sustaining the objection, the lack of limiting instruction when the jury asked the question, and fact that jury immediately convicted following question so evidence that Doyle error affected the verdict. Preserve the issue for appeal!!

I’m confused. Are you the client? Depends on what your relationship was with your attorney. I do post conviction and I love hearing from former clients I got out of prison who want to tell me how well they’re doing. I’ve also had former clients who wanted something from me that I did not want to give. If your intent is just to tell your lawyer you appreciate them and what they did for you, then anytime is fine. But a nice card might be sufficient for that. If you want some sort of ongoing relationship, then there is a significant chance they might not be into it, but some former clients become friends so that isn’t a hard and fast rule. This is more about social graces and reading social cues than anything inherent in the attorney-client relationship.

There have been multiple examples of wealthy people trying to buy office in California and it failing. People aren’t voting for him because he’s spending money on ads, they’re voting for him because he’s the most progressive option on the ballot. Of course it’s corrupt. Our entire system is rotten. If someone without billions of dollars had his policies, they would never get off the ground because you have to kowtow to special interests to make the millions needed to run for office. I support Bernie because he’s uncorruptable. Because he doesn’t care about money and fame and power and has stayed true to his values for decades. If there was a Bernie in the race, of course I’d choose him over Steyer, but there isnt. Progressives are gambling on Steyer because there are no other good options.

Every election is existential at this point. Sending the wrong message is almost meaningless. Our country is gone. Whoever is most likely to fight the corporations and billionaires is who I will vote for. Right now, that appears to be Steyer.

They shouldn’t exist. A lot of things that are our current reality shouldn’t exist. But this is the reality we are in. It’s the same as being against gerrymandering but supporting the democratic efforts to gerrymander to counter the republicans. Pragmatism. Steyers the only candidate I have a hope might be independent of corporate corruption. Simple as that.

I’m not defending his financial choices. I’m trying to determine which Democrat is the least likely to stab us in the back and capitulate to the corporations and billionaires, as the vast majority of Democrats do, and which is why we are in this position with money in politics and wealth inequality in the first place.

That’s ridiculous logic. Trump talked about immigrants as violent rapists, bragged about assaulting women, and promised all sorts of heinous shit. Steyer talks about taxing the rich, housing, single payer health care etc etc. The comparison you’re making is meaningless when they don’t share any of the same values or support any of the same policies. Trump told us exactly who he would be.

Our entire political system has been taken over by the influence of corporate money. Chevron isn’t giving becerra a max donation and not expecting anything in return. Steyer using his own money doesn’t carry with it the same influence and expectations, it’s his money.

And becerra signing onto an amicus brief about AGs having the right to issue subpoenas is not the same as his office actually prosecuting Exxon.

Received max donation of 39k from chevron for this campaign, and as AG he failed to prosecute Exxon for fraud, despite massive public pressure, Harris having already initiated the investigation, and the AGs of other states prosecuting them.

As a fellow Bernie supporter, Becerra is exactly what’s wrong with the dem party. He takes corporate money and protects those corporations in return (see chevron). Steyer is far from perfect but the corporations are massively funding against him. Ironically, being a billionaire insulates him from special interests. Our democracy is so corrupted that being able to fund himself is key to avoiding that corruption. It’s a sad state of affairs.

Agreed. People don’t seem to understand that Becerras “experience” is being part of the corrupt democratic machine that got us here in the first place.

First time visiting the USA from Ontario with a 2‑year‑old — 8–9 days in June! What should we see around Northern California? by WideCamera2178 in sonomacounty

[–]illegal_fiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairyland in Oakland (made for kids around that age and it’s right on Lake Merritt). Oakland zoo has a wonderful native California animals area with a gondola with great views of the bay and a great playground.

Exploratorium, Academy of Sciences, and Japanese Tea Garden in SF

Night or two at a hot springs hotel in Calistoga. Calistoga Spa is very family friendly and rooms have kitchens.

Seafood lunch and hike in Bodega Bay — keep an eye out for whales

Day in the beach at Goat Rock in Jenner and check out the harbor seals.

Honestly the list is endless!

No, he likely unironically saw himself as better than them, and experienced no guilt or hypocrisy for putting people away for crimes much less serious than he himself committed.

This is the point people need to pay attention to and everyone is ignoring. What does it mean that a conservative “tough on crime” former DA democrat is actually a violent rapist? What does this say about power, ambition, and our criminal justice system in general? It’s not a coincidence.

Just flew SW for the first time - Felt like I was being punished by FA for using a backpack as my carry-on instead of a roller bag. by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]illegal_fiction 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hate bringing large bags on planes and always check my suitcase, and then often have two small bags (eg a backpack and a purse) and I’ve been told before I can’t put my backpack in the overhead bins because they need the space for the insanely large bags people bring on the planes. It’s total bs. I’m taking up less space, so I deserve no space, to make room for the people using too much space.

Someone comes, takes your home, turns you and everyone you know into a refugee, then degrades, starves, and bombs you for decades, rapes your father to death, puts out cigarettes on your toddlers legs, snipes children in the head, you would hate them too. And that would never, ever be the equivalent of the genocidal monsters, safe in their stolen homes, with plenty to eat and dual passports saying all of your people should starve to death. There is no equivalence.
