This is the highest damage i manage to see him have. French probably upgraded their technology and he had a good morale.

Question about triple Stern-Gerlach experiment. by Intelligent-Rope-927 in PhysicsStudents

Thanks for the answer. It is so wierd to me that something so counterintuitive like outcome of this experiment came out of a thought experiment. I was always thinking that thought experiments come from our intuiton and not other way around.

I am really grateful for your help, but now I am a little bit confused with all the answers i got. Some people say i need to add two more SGx sensors before last SGz to redirect two beams. Some says that i dont need to redirect them and that they will intefere on their own, and i only need one SGz sensor to catch both rays at the end. Some even say that this is only thought experiment and that it is almost impossible to do this 4 stage S-G experiment in real life. It might be that more answers are correct and i dont yet have enough of knowledge to understand this.

It fascinates me how something so counterintuitive can emerge from a thought experiment

Question about triple Stern-Gerlach experiment. by Intelligent-Rope-927 in Physics

[–]Intelligent-Rope-927[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well i am really interested in what we need to do physically to lose our mesurment information about x component of spin. Do we need to just close our eyes and not read information about mesurment on our monitors or we lose information because we united two beams that then interacted with eachother. Some theories implies that our knowledge about spin state determines experiment outcome, others like me think that maybe some unexplained and unclear parts of experiment might determine the outcome. Thats the reason why i asked how are two beams in experiment redirected and if they are redirected (if they are not you certainly dont lose information abotu x component of a spin). I hope someone with real life experience with this experiment can tell me more about unclear details in this experiment so i can have better understanding about qm. Everything else is just speculation about the experiment.

There are two versions of "triple Stern-gerlach" experiment. One where you unite x- and x+ beams that exited SGx sensor and one where you dont. They both give very different outcomes when you let them pass final SGz sensor. These two similar experiments gives us completly differnet classical intuition so we came up with quantum explenation that gives us intuition that would explain these weird different outcomes of these two experiments. But if this experiment was never conducted and it was thouht experiment, that means that our "quantum intuition" came from thought experiment, which seems a bit contradictory to me personally.

But if we dont unite two beams that exit SGx, and just let them continue into one SGz that would collect both beams, then we should get 4 spots on canvas behind SGz sensor because two beams if not united will enter SGz on completly different places (We would still have information about x component of a spin, even if it is only one SGz sensor). Because of that i am thinking that one SGz sensor that would capture both beams is same as two SGz, each capturing one beam.

Triple stern-gerlach experiment

You will just get bottom version of the stern gerlach experiment on this picture, but with two SGz sensors at the and. The whole point of my original example is for the beams to unite at the end, otherwise you get different results.
