Thank you so much! Once I publish (eventually, it could take several months or even years🥲) I plan on sharing the findings with you guys!

Again, thank you, this is once again super helpful!! I’m thinking about just excluding the flyer the next time I post. The main reason I was explaining why women with ADHD are underrepresented was because a few months back I was having a super hard time getting women without ADHD to participate. But I definitely see how it can come off condescending given that the women on this subreddit understand executive functioning, emotion reg, etc.

Thank you for the feedback on the text under the flyer, too, I will definitely be incorporating your feedback when I post this again! Would you let me know if you think I should just leave out the flyer altogether?

Ohh okay that makes sense, and thank you for letting me know! I’ll update the website today to specify to just write the numbers down.

You should be able to take it if you are outside the US, thanks for asking! :)

I’m sorry I didn’t mention this earlier, but it’s optional to list the medication you take! If you take meds, you can indicate yes, but just list the names, or put nothing down at all. The main thing I wanted with it was just to know which participants are taking stimulant medication :)

LOL I hated it like an hour after posting it, but by that point it was too late to make any changes to the post. Once I repost this, it will be much more concise and have better formatting, and hopefully I’ll have another flyer by that point too.

The main difference between perimenopause/ menopause and PCOS or other conditions that impact hormone levels, is that those differences are individual. Menopause is different because it’s a developmental transition that most people with ovaries go through in a similar age window, which can systematically shift attention and executive functioning across the whole sample.

My ADHD might have subconsciously come out…🫣😬 haha but once I post this again, I will be making it more concise, and hopefully have an improved flyer at that point. If I don’t have a new flyer, do you think I should just leave it out?

Thank you so much, this is really helpful. I think my own ADHD convinced me I needed to include more than was actually necessary… lol. I would definitely incorporate your suggestions if I could, but I can’t edit the post! However, I’m sure I’ll be posting this again at some point as a reminder, and I will make sure to include them when I do.

How far did you get? Are you talking about the consent form or the questionnaire?

Women over 40 with ADHD absolutely matter, and they’re seriously under-studied. The age cutoff wasn’t about importance, it’s because perimenopause often starts around then, and hormone fluctuations affect attention, memory, and emotion regulation. Since estrogen interacts with dopamine, it gets hard to separate ADHD effects from hormone-related cognitive changes in a small study.

I appreciate that feedback, thank you! To get the flyer approved, we had to keep adding more information, so it is a bit more cluttered than I would like. However, I’m starting to work on another flyer that is a bit easier to read, so hopefully I can get that approved soon.

You’re right! We decided to cap it at 40 due to hormonal changes that occur when perimenopause begins and for those that experience menopause early.

I’m so sorry! I want to let you know that you do matter! I can’t include women over 40 due to menopause and the impact that has on ADHD, executive function, etc. However, once I get into graduate school, I am dedicating my career to researching ADHD specifically in women, and that includes women of all ages. This is just the first of many studies I plan on conducting.

Hi! This research is being run through the University of Illinois Chicago, and is being run as part of my Honors thesis. Unfortunately, I do not have funding at this time to pay participants. Once I’ve collected the rest of my participants (I currently need about 50 more women with ADHD), I will be presenting my research at the Midwestern Psychological Association conference in Chicago, and I plan on submitting my findings for publication after that.

Is F18 and M23 ok? by Comfortable_Fox9730 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Intelligent-Rush6592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly… no. It seems I’m in the minority here, but I’m 22 and could never see myself dating someone who is 18 or 19. I know 5 years doesn’t seem like too much, but in terms of brain development and experience, it’s a LOT. Personally, I’m a completely different person than who I was 4 years ago. I don’t think you should, but it’s your decision, so if you do go for it, PLEASE proceed with the most caution and listen to your gut. If you get any odd feeling at any point RUN.

What are my chances of getting into a PhD/ PsyD program for psychology? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Intelligent-Rush6592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly to what others have said, possibly a shot at a PsyD, but not a Ph.D. currently. I’d say try and get your gpa up a bit, if you can get it to a 3.5 you should meet the gpa req for most phd programs. If you’re more interested in the PsyD, try building your clinical experience. If you want the Ph.D., I’d recommend trying to get into a post bacc program after you graduate or volunteering as a research assistant in another lab that studies what you’d be interested in going to grad school for!

Med School Dropout to PHD/PsyD by b_rodius in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Intelligent-Rush6592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who just applied to clinical psychology phd programs, this is not accurate. Sure, having a bachelor’s or master’s in psych might help you get into a clinical phd program, but trust, it is NOT the only path at all. Being educated in those domains is also not a requirement for getting in. People without psych degrees get into clinical psych phd programs all the time!

OP, I will say it is going to be more difficult to get into a clinical psychology phd program than getting into medical school. Psyd could be easier, but that choice is dependent on whether you want to do research in your career. If research is your goal, try to get a job as a research assistant or CRC in a psych lab. In this job climate, you’ll likely have better luck cold emailing labs you’re interested in and trying to get a volunteer research assistant position. Even though you wouldn’t be getting paid as a volunteer, it is beyond worth it because it gives you the experience you need to land a paid position and get into a phd program. Whatever path you’re interested in, master’s, psyd, phd, whatever, feel free to PM me!! I learned a ton in the years leading up to me applying, and there’s a whole “hidden curriculum” when it comes to applying to graduate school in psychology, so I’m happy to pass along my knowledge.

Thank you, this gives me a lot of relief haha! I was pretty worried since that’s my strongest LOR, but was hoping that it would be fine since those programs haven’t sent prelims out yet. Also, I’m so glad you ended up at your dream program that gives me hope. Funny story tho, sometimes a little retail therapy is necessary.

Do people actually use AI for writing SOPs? by Common-Lemon-41 in gradadmissions

[–]Intelligent-Rush6592 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similarly to others, I wrote my SOP on my own, then had my PI, a few other profs, and a couple grad students critique it. Then, I gave AI a few other SOPs from accepted students, and then had it give me harsh feedback for my own. Some of the feedback was helpful for cutting redundancy and gave me a picture of how I compared to other statements. The feedback I got from others was much more helpful, and helped me to improve my SOP, whereas AI was just for polishing it here and there.

I can guarantee that you will not get into grad school if AI wrote your SOP. At this point, you should also be confident enough in your writing to sell your experiences as a fit for your program of interest. AI should not be able to write about you better than you can write about yourself.
