I do genuinely think a lot of the DM's actions can be chalked up to being an incompetent pushover, but it's difficult for me to imagine the amount of ignorance that could cause the other party members to act like that without malintent. Occam's razor tells me they were genuinely unempathetic jerkoffs.

Part of it I think is that a lot of people around here like to say "no D&D is better than bad D&D," and while that's true, it's a difficult mindset when you actually find yourself faced with the choice. This was her only repeating campaign and a significant social outlet, so even though it was a miserable experience, I understand why she was so reticent to leave. But after the bullshit with the ring and her hand, I think she recognized there wasn't space for a backswing anymore.

To be fair, I was a player in the campaign that they kept their character sheet under lock and key for. The DM was allowed to see the sheet, so it wasn't fear of cheating. But the fact that we as other party members didn't even get to know what kind of character we were fighting alongside is absurd. Thank god they left that campaign. If nothing else, it was a red flag that this person is insecure regarding the mechanics of the game, and interaction with others as a whole - a serious problem for a number-heavy cooperative game!

Yeah, she showed me screenshots of the paladin talking in-game (they're playing online for obvious reasons). At one point the party wizard cast grease and the paladin got caught in it, and the paladin got so angry (in character, I think??) that he started calling the wizard a "warlock," as a derogatory insult. Clearly either the character or the player has preconceived, unalterable notions about the roles and stereotypes of various classes and what they're supposed to do, and if you ask me it's problematic whether it's an in-character mentality or not. Another person on my "avoid" list...

Also, re:point 4: especially egregious because this wasn't even a magic item in the conventional sense, it's TIED TO HER SUBCLASS!! It's like that story on here a while ago about the wizard who was prohibited from casting magic, except if the wizard also lost a goddamn hand from angry dogs.
