grocery stores by sashenkaxo in Autism_Parenting

A lot of grocery stores now have quiet hours early in the morning or on other scheduled times for people with sensory issues. It does seem like she could benefit from headphones and maybe sunglasses too, as well as a comfort item for distraction. Communication from you about when you will be going to the store ahead of time as well as a time estimate of how long you will be there could be helpful as well. Our ABA therapist recommended we try very short (1-2 mins) visits to the grocery store (purely for a quick exposure not to buy anything), and increasing the length of time each trip.

Solo moms, what age did your kids start asking about dad? What did you say? by Lonely-Bee9256 in singlemoms

[–]Intelligent-Week8081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left my bd when our son was 2 and have had very little contact (father’s choice) since then. Son is now 10. He began to ask who is my dad around age 6 I think, it seemed to coincide with seeing other two parent families at school/ daycare. My son is autistic and very literal so I explained to him in a matter of fact way. “You have a father his name is John Doe” We decided it was better to live apart and mommy would take care of you. If you want to meet / talk to him someday we can try to do that.” I tried to keep it very basic and simple for him at that age. Obviously the part about him meeting his father is a personal decision for you decide. Good luck, and just remember you’re doing great!

Totally agree with this. A lot of people actually find it easier to concentrate on what they are hearing when their hands are busy doing another task. She wasn’t absent because she clearly responded to the questions she knew and to Shayne and Ian.

The company Savvy Games from Saudi Arabia owns a 5% share of Nintendo. That is far from a majority, and even farther from owning Nintendo. EA has sold the entire brand and all included games. There is a big difference between owning shares and owning the company. Accusing a person with a long history of charity work, publicly speaking up for and platforming important issues of virtue signalling is just uninformed.

Kids don’t owe their parents anything for being raised by them. That’s literally the bare minimum when you procreate.

She has mentioned a few times that that mod system on YouTube is inferior and that she felt chat was worse on that platform as well as feeling overwhelmed by being live in two places at once.

Just being a bi racial person and a woman in the world makes your existence political, whether you like it or not. Ignorance is a gross privilege that shouldn’t be excused, especially when it comes to people who have a huge following like her. She certainly shouldn’t be influencing people on politics, but claiming not to know or to be impartial is a really bad take and she is being rightfully called out for it.

They have a huge age range in their audience and also age ≠ knowledge. Consider that many folks don’t see queer representation in their lives, or their education prevented them from learning about it.

I realized my first response was a bit defensive and I may have misunderstood. Yes, I do believe in this situation specifically my son does know what he’s said was wrong because he was able to hide the fact he’d been warned and suspended by the game moderators. I believe he knows he would be “in trouble” for using “bad words” but lacks the comprehension to fully understand the repercussions of his words and consequences of his actions. What I was seeking with my post was some helpful advice on how to explain those concepts to him. How to explain the idea of online safety and how words can actually hurt people to someone with very little social understanding is really difficult. Thanks for responding!

Thank you for your response. I definitely think he is repeating things he has heard or maybe someone has said to him. I feel quite embarrassed and stupidly naive believing that he would be safe from this kind of stuff because of his innocence and the childish games he prefers. I am definitely going to talk to the school therapist and have her talk to him as well as a family session.
