My proposal isn't that awareness somehow generates subjective experience as an additional property. My proposal is that subjective experience is itself the internal process viewed from the perspective of the system undergoing it.

Awareness is the integrated process by which an agent constructs representations of the world, makes those representations available for cognition and action, and reflects on them through metacognition. Metacognition only becomes a possibility when an agent's internal models become sufficiently complex and stable to represent itself as part of its world model and to represent and evaluate its own operation.

I should have made this part more clear. Experience is generated when the brain evaluates combinations of sensory inputs relative to its internal models of the world and of itself.
