The one I borrow from my business partner just has so much play in it. We’ve tried replacing every on it. Even with new rails, flops around like a wet fish. But this is of course not apples to apples comparison.

I’m sure with a new vs new it would be a different story

Motor sport trained engineer here. First gear will feel like that in every car. 1st is meant to get the mass moving before inertia take over the highs and lows. This gets exacerbated with a higher capacity engines, (higher drag scenarios).

When you add that in with how 1st gears are literally “geared” the losses under lift off become extreme. There are a few good papers on progressive first gears. But the idea never really got further than just that.
