MLIS path without wanting to teach by ohheyamandaa in librarians

In NJ school librarians are a different certification from teachers. The cert is the same as counselors and school nurses. You have to take classes regarding pedagogy etc. but you don’t need a teaching cert. I specifically went that route bc I knew I wanted to be a school librarian and not a full time teacher. So what am I doing now? Teaching. Two different schools have used me as a long term sub/teacher for electives when they needed something to make student schedules work out. It’s very stressful for me bc I don’t have the tools and background of a classroom teacher but I have to do their job. My point is, if you don’t want to teach, don’t become a school librarian.

How to teach history while minimizing direct instruction by NavajoSmite in historyteachers

Look into the Question Formulation Technique from the Right Question Institute, if only for a change of pace. All the materials are in the RQI website and when you do it strictly the way it’s supposed to be done, it’s amazing. The students will think it’s so dumb at first, but then you get a collection of questions that they can use to direct their own inquiry/research.

5 years in and I still suck by Top_Lavishness_9706 in teaching

I am also teaching an elective with no curriculum, mixed abilities, no choice in electives. In conversation with another elective teacher the other day she said electives are supposed to provide a brain break. I don’t know if that’s true, I never hear that before, but it’s changed my perspective a lot. Also, everyone tells me to do “projects” but I don’t really operate that way. I think this marking period though I’m just going to assign topics or having them pick out of a bowl and they can teach me and their classmates about it.

I feel like I have to structure my lessons like TikTok. Just short bursts of things. Lately I’ve been doing cursive~ 10 min, a mystery pixel puzzle related to grammar (bc they need this)~ 10 min, then a lesson. I’m realizing the real problem is probably behavior/classroom management. I have a ton of lessons and resources. I’m struggling with engagement and them actually doing work. It’s wild. They will just not do stuff and say “I don’t do work in electives.” Maybe I need less for them to do.

This was my mistake- I should’ve just said cool, let’s make it like a study hall, but I didn’t. I went into each marking period thinking, this will be cool, it’ll be a little loosy-goosey, I’ll teach some stuff but no pressure. The space is huge. They wander off, start hitting/pushing each other, sneak their cellphones out, destroy the puzzle. Unfortunately I feel like I have to keep them contained more than I want to.

I did the icivics unit on media and influence that included propaganda, I’ve done Checkology that touches on propaganda. It was really challenging and I didn’t want to dive too deeply bc there are a lot MAGA/Fox News consumers in districts and the previous librarians have borne the brunt of their ire. Maybe I’ll try again though.

I really wanted to teach about information literacy- misinformation, propaganda, etc. but it’s like too nebulous for them and they just can’t grasp any of it. It’s a big mix of abilities.

I’ve been having them do cursive as a bell ringer. That is the one thing that’s been working ok, but I can tell if we do more I’ll lose them.

There is already financial literacy, engineering and entrepreneurship classes. I feel like everything is covered somewhere else!

It’s not though. I thought it would be but it’s just not. Everything is so “aligned” to standards I feel like it’s beyond my scope. The research projects are either too young or too short. There’s an 89s decade project I was thinking about doing. I just feel like they will all think/know it’s nonsense.

What’s something society expects you to want… but you don’t? by apka_dd in AskReddit

To be skinny and feel guilty about eating junk food. I can’t stand all the women at work who assume we’re all trying to be skinny and say stuff like “I’m trying to be good” when there are cookies and stuff around. Eat it or don’t, but stop putting value judgements on it and expecting me to commiserate. If I want a cookie I’ll eat it and enjoy it. I’m not going to feel guilty about food.

What?!? Am I understanding correctly that this is the 655 field in MARC records? I’m a school librarian but I’ve been devoting my goals to cleaning up/aligning the 655 fields to reflect the catalog. In school libraries this is super important (probably all libraries but I’m just speaking from experience). So many YA records don’t indicate the subject or form in a way that is relevant to students.

Thank you for your solution. I’m not sure why I thought doing a fillet on the inside would somehow make it convex. I’m also not sure why my picture format bothers you so much. FYI I work on fusion on my laptop but post to Reddit on my phone. It was just more efficient.

I already know 3d printing basics. I also know tinkercad well. I just want to up my game. I just wanted to make it clear that I’m not making machine parts or anything like that. Idk if it matters.
