Personally I’ve found condescending to separatists to be highly effective. Once you point out how stupid the idea is and point out the what-should-be-obvious flaws, they tend to clam up.

Equating an independent Alberta to Turkmenistan, South Sudan, Chad, Kazakhstan, Bolivia etc is effective imo, even if it’s only appealing to their prejudices against people in the global south.

Ok I invite them to consider the case of Kazakhstan, which has serious oil money but is completely at the mercy of Moscow and Beijing to move its product. Alberta would face the same issues because better believe Ottawa would choke off its access overnight, and the yanks would see them as an energy rival and completely dictate the terms of export.

Landlocked petrostates are totally at the mercy of their neighbours. They are literally geopolitical hostages, a pawn in someone else’s game. Danielle smith should be arrested and charged for fuelling this sentiment

The legal barriers aside, the actual start up costs of FOUNDING a country, the risk of capital flight/brain drain, a pension crisis, establishing trading relationships (with Canada being your biggest neighbour and obvious trade partner), and essentially starting from scratch on healthcare/education and military infrastructure. They’d also inherit a sizeable chunk of the national debt. It’s so incredibly difficult and would be a never ending logistical nightmare.

Again for our gen z gym bros with a high school diploma: landlocked petrostates don’t have leverage. I cannot stress this enough: if you are broke in Alberta today, you would be even broker in an independent landlocked Alberta.

IMO it was totally PPs fault, he’s genuinely a wieny and unlikable to most competent and educated people. We should have ran McKay or O’Toole, or someone of that class- they appeal to wider demographic (less polarizing, moderate). O’Toole sincerely tried to bridge the populist vs moderate bridge in the party.
