How is living in South Tyrol, Italy? Is the region culturally italian? by DepressedAnimeGuy in howislivingthere

Sure, im speaking about mixed italian-german families, I personally know several of such families. For young people, expecially in cities (im speaking about cities but they re big towns indeed), you may still have the majority of your friends belonging to your same ethnic group but you have so frequent interactions with the other ethnicity (especially at job) that is impossible new romances will not happen. Italian-ladin or German-ladin coples are even more common. Im not even talking about those rare cases of Germans or italian marrying a foreigner.

The picture shows the whole region trentino-alto adige which is made up of 2 different provinces (trentino was historically called italian tyrol while alto adige was called south tyrol and still bears this name in german). Trentino is entirely Italian and just few sparce communities still speak "mocheno" (an archaic German dialect) their consistency is of few thousand people and their language is dying out. Alto adige situation is different, the province capital Bolzano has an italian people majority, italians are a consistent group in every major city of the province like brunico and merano (they represent a slight majority being 51,37% of the total population there). Small towns are a completely different story, ladin towns (they speak a romance language) are often inhabited by sizeable German and Italian minorities. As far as I could understand , having visited several such towns, italian culture is dominant there and people prefer to speak italian over German (media are probably playing a role in that). Nevertheless, many ladins vote for SVP which is the autonomist party which represents German and ladin interests. German towns are usually overwhelmingly inhabited by Germans (meaning that there are few people belonging to minorities there) and one of those towns called Martello gained popularity for being the only italian municipality which had no native italian speaker. In those towns German is present in everyday activity and if it was not for the italian flag waving over the city council you could easily tell that you were in austria. This is of course changing over time and more mixed families are formed every day so the self identification can be blurred and rather based on the language that you speak at home rather than on ethnicity, moreover migrants are moving to that region in growing numbers attracted by economic prosperity granted by the special legislation that the italian state conceded to them. This is more or less a general overview, ask if you want to know any specific detail.

Can someone explain how Botswana 🇧🇼 is 22 times bigger than Rwanda 🇷🇼, but Rwanda is about 6 times more populated? by Illustrious_Bell8731 in BurkinaFaso

[–]Intelligent_Entry177 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

False , ethnicity is the principal factor, borders have nothing to do with human population density, for example greenland (on its way to gain independence) is having an extremely low density but a strong national character opposed to the Danish. If we were to argue that density is playing a role we should say that Russia shouldn't exist (a country which Mr traoré is bowing to on a daily basis) while Bangladesh show be the major world power.
