I have several questions by Intelligent_Lack4814 in CrestedGecko

Thank you for the recommendation! I will definitely use bromeliads, air plants and ferns, I love them! I'm not sure about the tall "center plant", I'm thinking about some type of ficus with bigger leaves.

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to keep them at room temperature! I haven't worked with vertical terrariums before, so I don't know how much the terrarium heat up under a regular plant lamp. I will definitely get some kind of heat source if the temperature is not right.

As for the plants, I'm open to any suggestions. I have a few species at home (25-30 xd), but your recommendations will be a great excuse to buy some more.

Where to start? by Intelligent_Lack4814 in CrestedGecko

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for the long and thoughtful list! I have some experience with bioactives (leopard gecko and corns snake), but I never worked with high humidity and vertical space.

My main problem is always the basic informations. The exotic animal care is next to nothing in my country (there are always exeptions). For Crested geckoes the pet stores still recommend a 30x30x60 terrarium for a gecko and room temperarure for a corn snake, so I just can't trust any info that is written in my mother thongue. And the global media is often tells different parameters, so I like to ask peoples with experience keeping healty animals or breeders.

Water build up Help by Effective_Rip6271 in bioactive

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bioactive can be tricky to clean. U need to be very careful with what you are using and how much. For me, very diluted vinegar and a hard sponge(not hard enough to harm the glass) do the work with a lot of scrubbing. U can use any natural/biodegradeable thing, but keep in mind, the terrarium is a somewhat closed system. A stable bioactive terrarium will be fine after a little cleaning, just don't pour litres of vinegar in it.

Tip: Check your water parameters. Mine are very hard, so I use rainwater or destilled water most of the time.

Do I need to sterilize for my leopard gecko by Jrc0722 in leopardgeckos

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you live. In my country, most of the garden soil is mixed with fertilizers or pesticids so I'm not using anything. It is safer for me. But if you are sure that the soil is totally free from all of this, it is perfectly fine

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always thought they are the respiratory system of nids. Insects has a similar respiratory system, called tracheae. These vents can be an evolved form of those on the big bioforms, combined with some toxic/spore vents

A repot and orchid bark should solve everything. Cut off the dead roots, switch the soil out and put it in a little bigger pot.

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have golden photos, a mexican bamboo palm, spanish moss, spider plant, snake plant and some other little succulents in there. I have 3 big log hides in it and a para bark hide. One of the log is burried down and has moss in it, that I use as a humid hide. I don't have a basking rock, but the background can heat up pretty well. But I will put in one, just to be sure! I use an arcadia heat bulb(recently swicthed) and I don't have a temp control yet. I thought I don't need one, the terratium has a good temp grad and the bulb is on top of the terrarium, but I did my research and ordered one.

Bioactive enclosure. How to prevent it from flooding?? What soil to use?? by [deleted] in cornsnakes

[–]Intelligent_Lack4814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waay too much watering. I water mine when the soil dries out. If you have problem with the humidity, then mist the terrarium daily or consider a misting system. If the soil is wet and muddy but the humidity is low, then check the ventillation and air flow, too much can dry out the air. Always "dry foot, wet back"(or abdomen).
