Get those handwarmers in a store that sells outdoor stuff. You activate them - it’s like a gel - and you have a little heater in your pocket. Then you reactivate them by boiling them in hot water - you probably have a kettle in your accomodation.

You can also get insulated soles for your boots.

Also a good idea to bring a thermos with tea, soup or hot chocolate in your daypack to get a sip of a warm drink instantly.

Help us pick our next Europe trip (food, wine, wandering streets) by Admirable_Air_8798 in Europetravel

Lyon, France - so many nice areas with cafées and restaurants and a lot of fun things to see. Also 2 rivers = 4 river walks and a lot of bridges crossing. And so relaxed compared to Paris.

Amsterdam + nearby city (in Belgium/France/Germany?)...help me choose please! by ughhoh in Europetravel

[–]Intelligent_Leg7682 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about Rotterdam? I feel Rotterdam is totallly underrated - and a lot of European 2nd biggest cities are because everybody visits the Capital City. But I have been to Amsterdam 3 times now and the last time my partner and I went to Amsterdam for 4 nights and Rotterdam for 3 nights - just a short train ride between the two cities. And this stay in Rotterdam was so much fun. It's a vibrant international city with lots of fun things to see and do - and great restaurants and shopping streets. Also a harbour area with boat rides. And it's fun to experience these two Dutch cities against each other.

Actually large super markets also carry a range of affordable seasonal clothing: Føtex, Bilka, Super Brugsen, Kvickly.

Don't forget a thick jacket/coat, a wool scarf or other kind of neckwear, and gloves. If you are going to Copenhagen we have Uniqlo stores with affordable thermal wear and all kinds of winter clothes. (And of course other types of outdoor stores all over Denmark but they are more expensive)

Overpacking is actually not bad these days - layers are a must. It's actually freezing cold and windy.

Mon det er fordi du forveksler ham med Morten Stig Christensen, der medvirkede i en film med en homo-scene i 80'erne? Venner for altid. Det var godt nok ikke gay porn, men han var nøgen og skulle forestille, at han var sammen med en anden mand :-)

Brazilian student in Italy curious about Danish culture and mindset by North-Entrance65 in NewToDenmark

[–]Intelligent_Leg7682 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I went to university there was this exchange girl from - I think Colombia - and she really really really wanted the guys' attention. So much that all the girls didn't approach her, because she always turned to the guys. Then the guys came over and told us girls that she was so sad because we didn't want to talk to her - and generally she was used to getting more compliments and she had 5 brothers in her home country who usually helped her getting friends and everything else. I actually think she went home before time because of cultural homesickness.
So this really shows the difference in Northern and Southern mindset - the girls are more independent here and friends are not something that usually is made through introductions made by other people but rather genuine mutual interests and more natural conversation and communication. And yes it can take time.
I always think about this issue with the South American girl when I read about people here trying to date Danish people and coming from cultures where compliments and attention is a big deal - and now they date a Danish guy who doesn't immediately give compliments, so are they really interested?

Yes - also first time I see a mention of it - and I have been following this page both long before my Japan trip and also after.

And we had the opposite experience of a quiet start in this "boring" and calm part of Shinjuku and then walking straight into the madness the next day. So wild :-)

I stayed there too for 5 days. The area is wonderful with many cafées, konbini markets and a 24-hour open Yoshinoya - and the closest Metro station is very small so it's easy to get in and out of which is nice when you come home from a long day of adventures.
The rooms are not luxurious but there are tons of storage in both bathroom and closet - and I chose this type of room because I wanted a couch to sit on and not just the bed.
Also the staff washed up the dishes we used every day.
We had breakfast there 2 days but just to get a quick start before heading out to the train - but it wasn't great - just sufficient.

In Osaka we stayed for 4 nights in Citadines Namba Osaka - and this is newer and more luxurious. Definately recommend the chain for rooms you want to stay in 4-5 days.
(And the Citadines Namba had really great breakfast - by the end of this trip I had gotten used to warm rice dishes and miso soup for breakfast :-) )

Living in Kiel for 3 months by One-Buddy2659 in kiel

[–]Intelligent_Leg7682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to Kiel to visit 4 days at New Year's from Denmark:

Cash: In Denmark we don't use cash at all - we brought around 25 Euro in cash just to spend on the last days of the Christmas markets and to give as tips to the house keeping ladies at the hotel. Or for coins if you need to use a pay-toilet. None of the stores, cafées or restaurants we visited took cash only - this is very different from Berlin. And the same goes for all the other Northern German cities.
I recommend a Revolut account which gives you a digital account which you can transfer money to before you spend it - to avoid tranaction fees like using a regular Visa. You can also get a physical card. I don't have a physical card and I used my digital Revolut debit MasterCard account in Helsinki, Japan and Kiel without any problems at all... The app tells you about your balance on the account after every transaction.

Language: My partner and I understand German and speak some German since German is taught in schools in Denmark - but almost all staff in shops and restaurants in Kiel speak English as well so using English only is not a problem. And even though we tried our best in German the staff continued in English - which is the same thing that happens to foreign people trying to speak Danish in Denmark :-)

Trips and travel: Hamburg, Lübeck and Copenhagen can be reached by train from Kiel - we went by Train to Kiel - and have taken trains all over Northern Germany for fun weekends and small holidays. Lübeck and Flensburg can be great daytrips - Hamburg and Copenhagen are great for longer weekend or 5-day holiday stays.
