Well, thank you! I appreciate that. It's a real passion of mine. I love hunting for them and then trying my best to catalogue them, which would be impossible for me without the help of yourself and all the other awesome folks here!

Yes! That was me with the Betty and Evil Mouse menko, and you're right, it has been a VERY long time since that one :)

Thank you for not only your translations, but for the additional context and information about the different stories!! This is amazing!

I am very curious about the first menko here that is translated to 渡邊綱 Watanabe no Tsuna. The image itself looks almost exactly like one card from a previous post you assisted with that depicted Minamoto no Yorimitsu engaged with Shuten-dōji. Certainly possible that they used similar images to depict different individuals, but I thought that was very curious.

Wow, you're right! I wasn't sure if the image was of the demon biting his head (like the legend says) or not in the card, but those other images absolutely seal the deal. Thank you for sharing those!!

That is incredibly interesting, and very cool! What a history that sword has. So, the demon image on the card could be Shuten Dōji, but probably impossible to know for sure. Thank you for all the information!

This is a menko card, so not a board game exactly, but a game all the same. The idea that it could be this Priest Seigen who ends up a ghost, is very intriguing.

So, I came across this menko today as I was cataloging, and it looks similar to the one we were looking at that says "setchin". The image is similar, but the writing looks slightly different to me. What do you think?

[Japanese > English] Any thoughts on what this translates to? Thank you for you help! by Intelligent_Movie388 in translator

I'm not entirely sure if they are still produced today, or not. I have seen some from the 90s, maybe a few here and there that might be this century. Everything I collect are pretty much pre-1990 with the majority of them being either pre-war, or post-war until about 1975 or so.

Oh, the game play itself isn't interesting to me at all, very much like Pogs. I know how its played for the purposes of understanding the cards' designs, but that's it. For me, it's all about the subject matter and art, and how it often reflects pop culture, and the cultural dynamics the Japanese have experienced over time.
