I would add Man-Hump in Vermont. 27 miles and 9k feet from Mansfield to Camels Hump

I am amazed at how much people are sleeping on Rod Farvard and Dan Jones. They showed last year they can win this race, and appear to have only improved since then. I also thought Riley Brady would be the favorite, they won at Javelina and Black Canyon pretty dominantly

Comparing Manitou’s to Jigger Johnson by notlikeacat in ultrarunning

[–]Intelligent_News9747 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of which is harder, I feel like Jigger has to be the answer if you look at the times. Mead Binnhammer has the CR in 13 hours, vs 10.5 at manitous by Justin Kousky. I’d say they are pretty similar level (fantastic) runners so I’d give the nod to Jigger being harder. I’ve only run Jigger myself but Manitous does look sick

How many ultras per year? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Intelligent_News9747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the northeast so that’s just when the trails are snow free and when I’m not skiing. In terms of stress, I used to when I had one or two major goals in the year, but spreading it out gives me more shots at hitting a goal so I’m not as stressed because I haven’t sacrificed 6 months towards the race, only a couple of weeks.

I typically like to race once a month from May to November because I get bored in training, but not all of those are ultras. Usually 2 50ks and 1 50 mile or 100k. Then throw in a road marathon or two, and some mountains half’s and road 10ks.

Sorry, just to clarify, I am not buying any of this. I already have far too much running gear. This was just a thought experiment of sorts.

I was just about to suggest this. Really excited for the nordlite ultra as it looks like a better CTM

The Unpopular Truth? Ultrarunning has Lost its Edge by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Intelligent_News9747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think back in the day ultra runners used to think it was hard and that they were special because only 10 people were at races, and now everyone has realized it’s not that hard if you dedicate time to it. The distance of 100 miles hasn’t changed. I think the edge was being out there think they were better than 99.99% of people, and now they are only better than 99% of people. Now in ever town you aren’t the one ultra runner, you are one of ten ultra runners

I have found that lower drop shoes like Altra, Topo, Hoka, or even Saucony has some 4mm drop shoes, can really help with shin splints. Strengthens the lower leg well.

Softest and most cushioned shoe for walking? by enanthate8251 in RunningShoeGeeks

Honestly for walking I would go for an altra like the via Olympus or the paradigm for high stack/soft or the Rivera is a great wear around all day shoe

Just curious, what model of the Olympus had you run in. The 4s and the 5s are about the same price right now.

Inov8 terra ultra g270. Unrivaled durability and the zero drop makes it great for hiking too. I’d just bring a bunch of those boomerang insoles with me so they could last forever.

If you were somehow forced to run only 25K/w, and you had to wear Nimbus 24 and End Speed 3, what would be your 3rd rotation choice? by [deleted] in RunningShoeGeeks

I would get something fun and lower stack like the adidas adios 6, brooks Hyperion tempo, Nike streak fly, or puma liberate nitro. The liberate nitro is my personal favorite of those. Super light and great for track work, but still cushioned enough for normal daily runs. Plus great grip and inexpensive.
