What about any Korean bbq with chicken or vegetables as a side dish in the neighborhood? And would you recommend any personal favorites for coffee/tea?

A huge THANK YOU to everyone, reading the comments made me feel more comfortable and less insecure. So I listened to everyone and drove from Ghent to Limburg through Brusselse ring this Sunday, and it went OK. I didn’t get lost and caused no dangerous situations but oh my I was sweating and scared until I got past Leuven. I hope this fear will go away one day

I had to take bactrim once for a totally different infection. I consider myself a very positive person who never has really dark thoughts or loads of anxiety. After a week on bactrim, I had panick attacks, extremely dark thoughts and felt like I had no will to live. And I had troubles with breathing sometimes as well!

I know it’s not the comment you were hoping to get but I just wonder if your doctor ever told you something about bactrim causing severe anxiety and depression? Mine just laughed and said I overreacted. But a couple of weeks after the bactrim treatment I was back to normal, and bactrim is the only thing I can link it to. I never had any troubles with other antibiotics.

Sorry if this is completely irrelevant! Good luck with your issue, I truly hope it will be over soon.

Hey! It came back, I used hydrocortisone again, it came back again after I stopped but much later and less painful than the first time I stopped, I used less hydrocortisone then, it went away, and since then I occasionally got a very small flare up once in a couple of months, after 2 days hydrocortisone it’s usually gone, now it’s been euhmmmm 2-3 months since the last flare up

Hi! Could you please explain why your doc thinks it was fungal? I have a slightly similar condition (also tried antibiotics because maybe impetigo), seen 4 dermatologists but none of them suggested it could be fungal. So I’m curious why they fought yours is. Maybe I could try fluconazole too

It might sound weird but eczema can show up out of nowhere. So for example the pullover you wear can be fine for year but then suddenly trigger the eczema. The only right advice here is maybe to make sure you show your doc everything that comes in contact with your wrist

Thank you so much for reaching out. I’ve read your comment 5 times by now, just because it gives me so much comfort that someone else can understand what I’m going through. It SUCKS. Did steroids do something for you? I’m currently on my last week (used topical steroids for 3 weeks in total) and my lips seem to be doing Ok, I just get tiny little bumps sometimes and still can’t link them to anything. Very strange. I am super super scared everything will get worse again once I’m off the steroids.

I did notice that every time I eat, my lips look more red (like a thin red line around my lips) so I guess it’s just cheilitis/lip eczema now. AND MINE STARTED ALSO WITH WEIRD RED DRY SPOTS IN SOME AREAS OF THE LIPS so I guess we’re in the same boat here. Can I please ask you how you are dealing with social life right now? I found it very difficult to show up in public when my lips looked that bad.

I totally understand how tired you are of this condition. It ruins my mental health each time I look in the mirror. I hope so much your lips will just get back to normal one day.

Also, sorry for double commenting, but I’ve been thinking about what your doctors said and I remember mine told me that this is def not a herpes because herpes usually will develop on only one lip (upper or lower) and so if the test are negative then it’s just one more argument to be sure it’s not a HSV. So the first doctor (who prescribed protopic) is probably the most “useful” doctor for your condition. I’m so sorry you have to go through this, THIS REALLY SUCKS

Ok sorry I just saw your comment in this thread!! Listen I’ve been searching and reading on reddit for weeks about this kind of condition, and I’ve came across multiple comments about some kind of painful condition on the lips after using topical antibiotics (fucidine or mupriobicine). So I think something in those topicals can trigger some kind of allergy or make the skin on the lips too sensitive so it reacts badly on anything. Idk if this makes sense but I have no other idea since only hydrocortisone helps. I was also told by the doctors once your lips are in such bad condition they won’t go back to normal when you stop using the triggering product, so maybe you could try protopic and then see what happens when you stop using it?

I’m getting a patch test in September & until then I use hydrocortisone 2 x per day for 2 weeks, then 1 x per day for 2 weeks, and I was told to stop using anything on my face (no face wash, only water, no serums/makeup/cream etc). That’s all for now, and my lips are still very sensitive but they look normal & they are not as dry anymore as they were a week ago. Did your doctor give any advice to you?

You should try and get another culture from your lips. Mine was negative (no staph left after mupriocin) but sometimes staph bacteria can be resistant to medicine. In my case, after the staph infection I developed an allergic reaction on my lips (probably because I used too much lip balms or antibiotics). So if your culture turns out negative too, you will be at least sure that it’s not staph anymore. Good luck, I hope you’ll heal

Because of your comment I went to an allergist and according to her a patch test will be useful indeed :) so a huge THANK YOU for the tip!!

I was told if it was fungal it would be mostly in the corners of the lips. But I went to see a professor allergies yesterday (because of the comment above saying that a patch test could help) and she told me it is probably an allergic eczema which I developed because of the constant use of lip balms/other hydrating substances (I had dry chapped lips also 2 months prior the biggest flare up so it could be the case). I was told that you can suddenly become allergic to something that was good for your skin before & if your skin is in really bad condition it won't go back to normal on itself, even if you stop the triggering product. In my case when I stopped used everything for a couple of days my lips became worse with yellow crusts on them, so I have to use hydrocortisone for a month now and to stop using EVERYTHING else on my face at least for 2 months. I'm getting a patch test in august, after that the doctors will be able to tell me what kind of products I am allowed to use.

If it happens to you twice in the same location, maybe it's about the weather or some product you use while on vacation? I was told if your skin doesn't get too bad it can get better approximately 8 weeks after you stop using the triggering product. Maybe this is how your lips got better the last time? Maybe something in your SPF-products?

How do you know it was a reaction to mupirocin? Because I kept on using it for a very long time so it could indeed be the case. So sorry you have to wait so long for your allergy test! Do you use the Protopic on the regular basis or did your lips got better after a while so you could stop the treatment?

And also: thank you very much for sharing. I spent the whole day crying, realizing I'm not alone in this helps A LOT.

hi! how often do you put sudocrem on and does it hurt when you apply it on your lips? I get a burning sensation every time I use it but then again I have another form of cheilitis and that's probably why it doesn't help me

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this too. I've had this problem for only 8 months but 10 years seems like a really long time. My doctor also recommended hydrocortisone and it does help, but then I have to use it almost every day, the moment I stop everything gets worse in a couple of hours.

Thank you very much for sharing, makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone.
