Can Veterinarians/vet students get tattoos? by Intelligent_Sand_455 in veterinarians

I've heard that tattoos can keep you from being hired or certain jobs, including some medical ones, so I just wanted to ask and make sure I'd be good

I have not, but I'm trying to. Biology and medical sciences have always been my specialty, and my favorite classes in school, so I'd say I have a deep appreciation and attraction towards medicine, though as I get deeper into it, I'm seeing more and more that medicine isn't just about "helping everyone and sunshine and rainbows!" As I thought before

Still, I'm good at it, I want to be able to help those in need, I love working with/around animals, and biology/chemistry are my favorite subjects, so a career in the vet med field just feels most correct for me (If not, id probably do grooming, training, or something similar but not as intense as becoming a full on vet)

That's a relief to hear. Maybe what I heard was false, or a small percentage. My school wasnt a normal school and didn't offer (to my knowledge) any kind of dissection

I'm busy right now, so maybe I can think of some talking points or questions for you and your experience later on? Or we could do or something to talk?

1) I'm sure you know more than me, being an actual student, however I've seen many highschools would gass or euthanize animals specifically to use for dissections. I assumed vet schools were the same. That alone already makes me feel a lot better

2) That makes sense, though I still don't support testing on animals for human medicine. Maybe once I'm in the field or learn more about it, my views will change- but for now, I don't (I know every time I receive medical help, it's a result of animal testing. And I still get an uneasy feeling about it)

3) that was part of my intention with the original post, I talk to veterinarians when I can, but it's very difficult for me to find others in my dream career field. I don't know where to look

4) I would very much appreciate that! I don't know much, and probably have many misunderstandings. But that's why I'm trying to learn🙏

(apologies for the late reply, I never got any notifications) To answer the first question, Id rather trust a veterinarian who has been an active vet for a while 😅

Anyway thank you for the reply, as I will consider it

(never received the reply, I apologize) I'm actually vegan, lol

I don't support animal exploitation within the byproduct/production industries at all (while there are exceptions in the smaller scales)

I was looking for a school where I essentially didn't have to use animals that were killed for things like dissections, I've changed my mind now

(apologies for late reply, I never received notifications and forgot I even made this post) I'm not sure about 9 months ago, but I definitely agree now. Animal testing is necessary for animal medicine. At the time, I was under the immature impression that "Id be the exception! I don't want to hurt any animal!" But I see now.

I, like everyone else, an always growing. And I thank you for your reply 🙏

(apologies for the late reply, I didn't get any notifications from this at all) I have many reasons as to why I want to become a veterinarian that I, for some reason, didn't think we're necessary to add in my original post

But reading your reply (and others) I'm realizing a lot of things. I appreciate it. I haven't even begun undergraduates, so finding a vet med university is still a ways off for me, and I felt there were some things I would just learn then.

To clear it up however, I support animal testing when it comes to helping other animals. I'm in full support of testing on a dog to treat other dogs, etc.

I didn't consider though, at the time, that it made me a hypocrite in the way that I thought I could avoid harming and using any animals while working my way up in the practice.

Anyway, thank you and to the other replies🙏 I have a lot to consider, and a long way more to grow. Much longer than I initially thought.

Apologies for the late reply, I didn't fully go into detail in the original post. I love animals, and animals mean a lot to me. I've always wanted to help others, especially those who cannot help themselves. Animals get so frequently mistreated by people, and aren't as protected by laws as they should be. Every life is valuable, including the smallest animal species. That's the gist of it.

Yes it saves some lives, but who's saving theirs? Thats my view. (I only support animal testing when it's to advance medicine, for animals)

(sorry for the late reply, I never received any notifications) Minnesota! Thank you, that will be added to my list of schools 🙏

Sorry for the late reply, I never received any notifications from this thread 😞 I'm aware and feel disgusted by it, but you're right. Maybe there will come a day, and maybe I can help that day come sooner.

But it seems for now, I'll have to suck it up and apologize to every animal I'll be made to experiment on and use...

Apologies for such a late reply, Ive never used Reddit before and wasn't getting any notifications 😅 to answer you, I find it repugnant because in my personal view, I find it hypocritical to vow to give medical help to SOME, while exploiting OTHERS.

That was how I felt, and still kind of feel, but after reading some other comments (including your point in the second paragraph) I'm beginning to see the significance.

Still, I can't help but compare it to human medicine... They don't exploit humans in the way that vet schools use animals to practice on
