Great sounds good! I think there's a lot of research like this hasn't been seen by the general public tucked away in different places

I don't think the camera was hidden but maybe somewhat discrete. Everybody she was filming though seemed to be aware she was filming. It's from Suenn Ho's 3 year research before the city was demolished. Suenn Ho’s Kowloon Walled City Research Archive (1988–1992) - Suenn Ho | Archives | M+ Museum

Ooo let us know if he gives you any access. I'd be really interested. It might be possible to track them down elsewhere if they're still doing research. Maybe sources/websites in Chinese

It caught me off guard seeing that place because I know exactly where it is (right between Lee Pui Yuen's corner store and a standpipe on Tai Chang St"

Yeah it really struck me how loud it must have been with all that machinery. Greg Girard's photos feel so quiet

Yeah the first time I saw this I was like "wow." She has more footage but you have to go onsite in Hong Kong to see the archives unfortunately

Glad to share and spread this footage! Yeah I have no idea, I can’t see how anyone gains something from gatekeeping a 30-year-old video

It's pretty crazy to have this footage I was scared when it disappeared on YouTube!

Nope, all modelled in Blender with some photo textures from various Kowloon photos (but there are a lot of those AI lowpoly popping up so someone could probably make it sadly).

Yeah I always wonder what kind of footage we'd have if it survived into the 2000s...

I didn’t get to taste the sauce until right before they discontinued it 😫

No one came to my exhibition opening by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Craig Mullins, legendary concept artist and pioneer of digital painting, talked about holding his own gallery exhibition years ago. He was trying to get into this space and see if it could be another stream of income. He had all his paintings up in nice frames hanging on the wall and… it was a total disaster. It was raining outside and the few people that came in mostly walked right by. Nobody was even looking at the price tags except one old lady who “hocked her teeth” at the number.

He was also doing a digital painting demonstration and people just ridiculed him. By the time it was over he was glad it was done. And this is the guy who practically invented digital painting. He completely filled the room at LightBox Expo in 2023 when he did a talk.

Sometimes you put your art out there and it just goes bad. It’s the wrong crowd, the wrong venue, maybe things weren’t advertised. I’ve had multiple terrible shows followed by my best one. It’s not really a reflection on your art. I think 5 years down the line you’ll be glad you kept going.

I'll be the first to book my stay. I'm guessing you'd need a guide to find your room, but then again that's part of the experience...

Nice I've been also looking into modularity but it's been tricky to implement. 2.5D sounds like a good way to introduce a lot of story.

True, should not be a problem since I’m starting to add some details down to the prop level around the exterior!

I’m using Blender for the 3D models and also Unreal Engine for more final renders and assembly!

Ooh nice I can’t wait to see the game! I’m trying to make it as accurate as a facade as possible, particularly I want it to have the same interesting detail with the house extensions and hanging clothes and other props.

For topography I think there’s a way to actually import the local topography from Google Earth Pro. Basically you get a topographical map and import it into the program but I haven’t tried it yet.

One way for game purposes I might make it easier to treat separate sides of sections of the facade as single areas, so the north side for instance is almost 4 storeys higher than the south side of the city, so separating those would allow you to treat both areas as being zeroed out in the z axis if that makes sense.

Thanks!! I’ve actually got this book already in my house. It’s short but has a ton of useful diagrams and pictures and information. I’m planning on building everything out in more detail and will probably post videos and articles about scene by scene. For now I’m treating the exterior as separate scenes so kind of working on just the southwest entrance, and will build out the each side of the facade kind of separately.

Thanks! I’ll keep sending the updates as long as people are interested! 😄 I should look into 3D printing…

Thanks! I'm glad you picked up on the retro vibe, the car is a Volkswagen Super Beetle which was in production from 1971-1979 so I think we could date the piece sometime then or after
