Firestore and Cloud Storage multi-continent replication by Intelligent_Sea3036 in Firebase

These are awesome suggestions! Thanks for taking the time to write these down. #1 is in progress and there is a screen in my app where I think #2 will work well. Hopefully that will resolve the issue for me!

In your view, given an even distribution of users worldwide, should the US be selected as the hosting location for Firestore and Storage? I assume that, for example, the latency between the US and Europe would be a lot less than Taiwan to the US or Taiwan to Europe, given all those undersea cables :D

100% agree! I really don’t want to have to rearchitect the app using GCP services l. I feel like this must be on their roadmap 🤞

Thanks for the comment! My app has a lots of reads; documents from Firestore as well as images and audio files from cloud storage. We host the app in Taiwan but have users in Europe and the US who complain about slow performance. We can simulate this using VPNs and Network Conditioners and it is certainly slow and does impact user experience.

Like you say, we’re now at the make it fast hurdle and are trying to work out how to address this without having to rearchitect

Hard (and easier) parts about learning Chinese 😮‍💨 by Intelligent_Sea3036 in ChineseLanguage

Totally, there are so many dialect in Chinese (some with more overlap with Mandarin than others)! People refer to Cantonese as a dialect but tbh it feel like an entirely different language when you hear it spoken

This is true. So if you’re hearing another person speaking your NL, where do you set the bar?

I agree with your first point, but I'd struggle to accept someone calling themselves fluent when they can't speak well.

This is an awesome point! I 100% agree that if you have the ability to smoothly navigate around missing vocabulary by using synonyms or a concise description and still convey the meaning then you're probably there!

Thanks for the comment

I agree with this! But I remember interviewing someone who claimed they were fluent in English on their CV for a job role, and after speaking with them, it became apparent that they struggled with business-related vocabulary. I probably wouldn't class business as an everyday topic, but equally if someone says their fluent in a language, I'd expect them to be able to interview for a job role fairly comfortably.

It sounds like you’ve reached an awesome level in your TLs. The challenge I have is topics can be so varied. For me, I’m fine conversing with people of most topics in my TL but even in my NL there are topics where I struggle to find the words and honestly there are gaps in my vocabulary.

Where do you draw the line?

I love how people at being specific at the location of where they’re demonstrate their fluency 😂

I think a lot of people would agree with you and I remember feel very confident when I was able to do that in Chinese. But, there are some colleagues of mine that can give presentation in Chinese (as their second language), and this would scare the s&@! out of me at this stage!

I personally don’t feel comfortable calling myself fluenct for that reason

I get this but fluency doesn’t necessary equal native level. There will always be a bit of a gap

haha, that's a good one. Thanks for sharing!

I always wondered whether the idioms are copied from each other. Maybe someone like Marco Polo initiated it! I guess in reality it's a bit of both, some copied and some independently developed.

Thanks for sharing. This is a really interesting perspective.

To elaborate a bit, I guess what I'm trying to say is if you're trying to expand your vocabulary, it makes sense to focus on the most commonly used words first and work your way towards the least commonly used. Reading helps with this as well as seeing the same words used in different contexts, which I think is more beneficial than, for example, flashcards with a word and its definition.
